Only when we are parked at the Ezra Estate do I notice a key missing piece.
“Where’s your ring?”
“I gave it back to Hunter. He lied and cheated one too many times. He can rot in hell for all I care.”
I hate Peni, but her comment makes me laugh.
“You can say that again.”
The front door of the mansion opens and Mrs. Ezra comes running out to her daughter. Mr. Ezra stands in the doorway, watching like a hawk.
“Peni, darling! What a lovely surprise!”
When Mrs. Ezra spots the suitcase, her face twists to one of concern.
“What happened?”
Tears leak out of Peni’s eyes again, making me uncomfortable. I don’t like when people get emotional around me. I never know how to react.
I make a judgement call. Peni and her stuff are far enough away from my truck that I could just pull away with no issue.
Screw it. That’s what I’m doing. I get back in my truck, pulling away from the Ezra Estate. Peni and her mom are still standing in the driveway, Peni bawling now.
She deserves it.
