She laughed at something her friend had said, her head tilting back a little and her eyes crinkling because her smile was so big. He watched her from across the room, not focused on anything his friends were saying. Taking a sip of his beer he looked away from her and back at his friends. That's when she looked over at him and studied his features that haven't changed much since the last time she saw him. It had only been six months.

She said something to her friends about needing fresh air, she walked by Shawn and his friends as she headed for the balcony that was connected to the apartment. It was a friend of theirs who had just announced his engagement so everyone had gathered in the couple's downtown apartment. She looked over the lights of the city admiring their beauty as the sun began to set.

Shawn saw her walk by and watched as she went outside. She leaned against the railing as she looked out. She had changed a lot more than he did since the last time he saw her. She seemed a little thinner but thicker in the right areas. She had on a little more makeup than usual, but she was still the same old Y/N. The same Y/N that he left six months ago. She looked good, he thought.

The alcohol in his system gave him a little courage. He excused himself from his friends putting his beer down on the counter. His friends looked at him puzzled but when they saw where, more like who, he was headed to they put it together. It had been six months since they called off whatever they had going on. They were never official but they were officially exclusive. They hadn't talked since the night he walked out of her apartment and left her to pick off the pieces of her broken heart on her own.

She heard the glass door sliding as she still looked over the lights, it was dark out now. She had a feeling she knew who it was, but she didn't turn around. He leaned against the railing next to her, copying her stance. It was strange to be with someone who she had spent almost a year with intimately but now he seemed like a stranger.

"It's so pretty out here. You should have seen the sunset." She said, still not looking over at him. She knew that if she did his messy curls and honey eyes would just melt her and draw her back in. She didn't want that. At least not right now.

"Yeah, I bet." Was all he said as he turned his body to face her, still leaning against the railing. He studied her features for a minute. The lights of the city reflecting on her bright eyes that always held a sort of spark in them. Her long eyelashes fell softly against the smooth skin of her cheeks as she closed her eyes for a minute.

"Why'd you come out here?" She questioned as she opened her eyes, finally turning towards him and mimicking his stance.

"Wanted to see you." He simply said.

"Could've called." She gave him a little attitude as she replied because she doesn't have time for his smooth talk. It would just make her fall to her knees and beg for him to come back to her.

"Time difference." He said messing with the chain and pendant around his neck.

"Yeah," she scoffed looking down at her boots, "that always seems to be the problem." She finishes.

"Why'd you really come out here." She asked matter o factly.

"Y/N, I want to talk." He said taking a step closer to her.

"What is there to talk about, I think you said enough six months ago."

"I don't think you did, I'm the one who did all the talking." He said.

"What more is there to say. I have nothing to say to you, you're the one that left me. Remember?" She rolled her eyes at his ignorance.

"I know Y/N, but you know that I can wait for you. When you're ready. I'll be there. I can change everything." He said with soft eyes. He wanted to reach over and touch her face. Feel her soft skin under his fingertips once more.

"Shawn, don't talk like that. I'd never let you do that." She said. And it was true, that's why she never protested the break up in the first place. She would never let him drop his career for her or drop anything for her.

"I know you wouldn't, and that's exactly why I want you."

"You're being crazy." She said as she began to walk inside.

"It's crazy that I want you? That I still love you?" He grabbed her wrist and she turned around facing him.

"It's crazy because you are the one that broke up with me, but now you want me back? Why?" She said, her voice soft as she finished.

"I love you. I didn't realize that you're the one until after I left you. I regret that night so much. I thought that you could find someone that could be there for you, but I want to be the only one who's there for you. I'd walk deserts and sail across all the oceans if it leads to you." He said laughing a little at the end.

"That's the poet in you speaking. But Shawn I don't want to be at your beck and call. I don't want this to be another trial and error. I don't want to break up as soon as we have a small problem about distance."

"Y/N I promise it's different this time." He said bringing his hand up to cup her face. He rubbed his thumb gently across her cheek. The same way he did seven months ago.

"What if it's not Shawn? I can't do this again." She said pushing his hands away from her face and looking down.

"Y/N" He pleaded her name as she reached for the sliding door.

"Call me, Shawn. It's not like I don't want to be your friend." She said before walking inside.

He watched her go up to her friends and say something before she grabbed her purse. She went up to the newly engaged couple and said something before walking out the front door. Shawn fought the urge to go after her. He knew this was best. Until she's ready, he'll be waiting.
