"Daddy, daddy, wake up!"

Shawn slowly opens his eyes and sees his five-year-old daughter standing by his bed in her pink pajama. She is holding her teddy bear close to her chest with a frown on her chubby face. Shawn looks at the clock on the bedside table. It's only three in the morning.

"What is it, Skyla? Why are you out of bed?" Shawn asks softly as he sits up and takes Skyla's hand, pulling her closer to him.

"There's a monster, daddy, in my room," the little girl says almost in tears.

"I'm sure there isn't." Shawn chuckles and kisses his daughter's forehead. "Come on, baby. Daddy will take you back to your room."

"Can daddy fight the monster?"

"Of course. Your daddy is the strongest man in the world," Shawn says as he holds Skyla's little hand to take her back to her room.

"Mr. Monster! You better run away fast because Skyla's dad is here to teach you a lesson!" Shawn warns the imaginary character before entering the room in a ninja-like way which makes Skyla laugh. She doesn't feel scared anymore now that her father is there to keep her safe.

You've been standing at the door the whole time, watching Shawn tucking your daughter in. You smile and walk toward the bed. You stand behind Shawn and look at Skyla who yawns and finally closes her eyes. It doesn't take too long until she falls asleep again.

"Shawn," you call out your husband's name but he doesn't respond to you, instead he says to your sleeping baby girl, "I wish your mother was here."

Right. He cannot see you or hear you, no one can anymore. It's been two years since the tragic accident that took you away from the people you love. But instead of going to heaven or hell, you stay on earth and watch your friends and family going through so much pain over your death, which is no different from being in hell.

You put a hand on Shawn's shoulder but he doesn't know it. He leans forward to lay a soft kiss on your daughter's cheek. You cannot help but smile when you see the look Shawn's giving your baby girl. It's the same look he used to give you when you were alive. Skyla's the only good thing left in his life since the day you left him. He promised you that he would take care of her and he never breaks his promise. But sometimes you wish he could find the time to make himself feel happy too.

Shawn finally stands up from the bed, being careful not to wake his daughter.

"Go back to bed, baby. You're exhausted," you say as if he could hear you.

Shawn rubs his eyes tiredly and stretches his arms as he yawns. He's obviously sleepy but he cannot go back to bed now that he's up and it's only three hours until the sun comes up.

You walk behind him as he leaves your daughter's bedroom to go to the kitchen. As the refrigerator light floods the darkroom, memories rush back to the time you and him slow danced in the kitchen to one of his songs, the many times you two couldn't sleep and ended up sitting on your kitchen counter in just your underwear, talking about the silliest things you could think of.

Shawn gets a can of beer in the fridge and closes the door. The light goes off and the dark cold room brings you back to reality where there's only loneliness.

"Drinking beer at this hour?" you ask him with your eyebrows furrowed.

Strangely, it's like Shawn could hear what you said. He's just about to open the can but then he freezes and puts it down to go get a glass of water instead. You follow him to the living room after that. It seems like he's not going back to bed anytime soon. Shawn turns on the TV and puts on a CD before he makes his way to the sofa.

"What are you watching?" you ask and sit down next to your husband. You feel a sharp pain in your chest where your beating heart used to lie when you see what's on the screen. Shawn's rewatching your honeymoon videos.

"Shawn, look into the camera! Say hiiii!"

"Hiii!" he waves at the camera showing off his cheeky smile.

You remember that day. It's your first day in Venice for your honeymoon and you just got a new camera as a wedding gift from your brother, so you decided to bring it to good use.

"So a really weird thing happened. This morning when we woke up it was raining cats and dogs but at 9 AM when we were getting ready to leave the hotel it's a beautiful day again. How fortunate!"

"Y/N, who are you talking to anyway?" Shawn says in the background. The frame moves from your face to his and he laughs at you.

"I don't know, probably future us or our children," you say then Shawn waves at the camera.

"Hi, Skyla! Daddy and mommy are having a trip!"

"Skyla?" you laugh and zoom out so the camera can capture both of you. "You already decided our baby's name and gender?"

You breathe out a laugh. He did make a right prediction. Your first child was a girl and you named her Skyla like he had wanted, but you didn't think Skyla would be the only child you would have with him.

The video keeps on playing. You hear quiet sobs and turn to look at Shawn.

He's crying.

"S..." you reach for his hand but he cannot feel it. You hate this so much, not being able to do anything at moments like this. You cannot hold him and tell him it's okay that you are always there with him. You can't even shed a tear. So once again, you sit next to your husband, helplessly watching him.

Shawn buries his face into the palms of his hands and breaks down. He's been trying to be tough in front of everyone he knows, especially his daughter. But whenever he's alone he always falls apart with the thoughts of you. It's been two years since the day you left and he cannot get over the fact that it's real.

"Shawn, please..." you beg desperately and wrap your arms around his trembling shoulders. Your chin rests on the top of his head as you close your eyes. You wish he could feel your touch. You wish he could see you. You want him to touch you. At moments like this, you just want to disappear on the face of the earth. What is the point of staying around when you cannot reach out to the people you love?

You cannot get burnt. You don't bleed. The inside of your chest is empty. You're dead. So why are you feeling so much pain?

"Shawn, I love you so much..." you start talking to your beloved husband. "I know you cannot hear me but I'm sorry I cannot be there for you and Skyla. You have to stay strong and raise her well. You'll find someone new and she will love you and our girl as much as I do. Until then, I'll always be by your side but baby you've got to be strong for me."

Shawn lifts his face up and suddenly he turns his head to the left, looking straight into your eyes. For a brief moment you believe he feels your presence. He cannot see you or hear you but you know he knows you are here. You reach up your hands to hold his face and he doesn't move a bit. Shawn is looking at you with his teary eyes. So you lean in and lay a kiss on his pink lips, trying to remember how it feels to have a heartbeat.
