One day, as David was in the sheriff's office cleaning, he thought of everything.
And by everything, he meant Melvin and what had happened last month. Maybe soon David should learn how to cook. He couldn't even boil a pot of water for himself.

Mona had offered to help, and if he didn't want her teaching him, she gave him some other people he could go to for help.

Ed Earl sat quietly, still eating his lunch. As he did, he read a day old newpaper he had brought to work. David glanced over at him quickly before noticing a car pulling up to the station. Fred's car it was.
He watched as Fred rushed out of his car, slamming the door shut. Then, running to the station.

Soon enough, he bursted through the door, huffing.

"Fred?" Ed Earl asked suprised, but still not looking up from his paper. "What's the matter?"

Fred held up a hand as he tried for a few moments to catch his breath.

"It's thats dagum Melvin P Thorpe!" He croaked. "He's back, and he's turned on both of ya'll now. Trying to get the towns people to go against the ranch I tell you!"
