CHAPTER SIXTY

A number of people bumped into me as I walked down the hallway, I clutched the box of books in my arms. Sophia stopped in front of me, blocking the rest of my path.

"Hey Sanders. You ready for the start of this year?"

I smiled. "Just cleared out my locker."

She nodded as an awkward silence eveloped between us. "I just wanted to say thank you for this year..."

I didn't really understand what she thought I did till I looked around. The people around us were smiling towards us... towards me and talking towards each other. Sophia's eyes followed mine, "People don't feel like they have to talk to their own groups of friends anymore." She shrugged, "Without Mel, everyone's kind of free."

I watched as a cheerleader from our old team, Scarlett started flirting with Fred. Fred's eyes met mine across the room where he gave a small, shy smile. Plus with each word Scarlett spoke it was obvious that Fred's cheeks were heating with embarrassment.

"So she's gone?" I turned back towards Sophia.

"I saw her getting her books today. With school starting up again soon, I think that she wanted to get out of here pretty damn quickly. Everyone was staring at her."

"Oh..." My voice trailed off.

Sophia smirked. "Don't feel bad. Everything around here is so much better without her."

"What's Sienna doing?"

"Without her favourite leader, I think that she'll be fading into the background of this school."

"What about you?"

That smirk widened as her eyes trailed across the room. "With Mel gone, I think that it might just be my chance to have what I want." Blake gave her the same smirk across the room.

"Ew, Blake... really?" I screwed up my face.

"Come on, you have to admit. He's hot."

"He's a player." I muttered.

She shrugged, "So was Caleb before he met Mel and you."

Touché.

"Anyway I'm going to go over there." She winked and started walking backwards. "See you soon! We need to catch up."

"I don't know if I can be friends with anyone interested in Blake." I muttered.

Sophia laughed and walked away. Shrugged to myself, I parted down the hallway and smiled towards my fellow class mates who were grinning towards me.

My shoulders bumped against every ones as they rushed up and down the stairs. My foot collided with someones... or maybe it was own because I almost tripped. My box fell to the floor where a bunch of my books fell out.

I knelt down to grab them though I paused when someone's hands started grabbing them. I opened my mouth but stopped when I noticed who it was.

I was speechless.

She grinned, "What? You don't think it's possible for me to be nice?"

I stared at Mel with wide eyes. "To be honest, yes."

To my surprise she laughed. Mel handed me my books. I took them by surprise and put them back in the box. We stood at the same time as I eyed her.

She laughed again, it wasn't the same mocking laughter that I was used to. There was an awkward silence as we stared at each other.

I studied her as she looked away uncomfortably. Was this a trick again? She looked... happy? Not evil happy but generally happy...

"Just do it." I sighed, "Whatever you want to do to me. Get it over with."

She blinked at me for a few seconds before she smirked evilly. There it was. "I'm not planning anything Alley. You won."

"I-I won?" I said with disbelief.

She shrugged, "You got me. I'm moving and I start tomorrow." There was another silence which she finally broke herself. "You take care of him OK? He's a good guy."

Speechless, it took me a while to answer. "I know he is." I almost smiled.

She turned around to leave but I stopped her. "Mel, why are you... letting this go?"

Mel paused and shrugged, "It was fun Alley." I stared at her blankly. Uh what? "I never thought anyone could ever take me down from this school... but some how you did it." She shrugged again. "Who knew that it would be the nerdy no one who took me down? Anyway, I didn't see it coming but it was fun while it lasted. You won fairly. It was the best fight I've ever had."

I stared at her blankly before saying, "If that was your term of fun then I seriously worry about you."
She grinned and started walking away. Oh crap, why can't I leave things? "I'm sure that you'll find someone Mel."

"Whatever dork." That was more like it. She walked away.

"Someone who's just as messed up as you!" I called after to her. I smiled to myself when I heard her laughter. I watched as she left till my eyes landed on two figures walking out the doors. I walked towards them, smiled and stopped in front of them. Aiden and Blake stopped and froze. "I guess I'll be seeing you next year Blake or are you going to make my dreams come true and tell me that you're moving as well?"

Blake smirked and crossed his arms over his chest. "Sorry A but I''ll be seeing you next year..." There was another silence as I looked towards Aiden. He smiled towards me. I guess that he's over me punching him. "I'm sorry about this year though."

I looked back at Blake, his face was generally serious. I sighed, "You're forgiven."

That smirk suddenly reappeared. "Couldn't have been a bad kiss though right? For a first one?" He winked.

I rolled my eyes and sighed irritably. "At least now you can say that you've kissed every girl in this school Blake." I muttered before looking behind them. Sam stood a little far away. She looked miserable. Dammit. "Just for the record, you don't even compare."

I turned around to leave him but stopped when he said, "Maybe this year was good for you Alley."

"What do you mean?"

"You'll always be known as the bad ass who stood against Mel."

I shrugged as my eyes met Aiden's. "Hey Aiden."

He smiled towards me, "Hey A."

My mind rushed towards the events of this year to now... how much I changed... maybe he was right. Maybe this year was good for me. I had a lot more confidence in myself then I've ever had.

Blake looked behind me at Sam. "Your red head friend... she's not taken is she?"

I couldn't help but crack a smile. "Touch her and you're dead."

I turned around and looped my arm with Sam's. She was crying. "So he did it?" I asked. I juggled the box in my other hand. Damn, it was heavy.

"Y-you knew?" She cried.

"He just told me." I managed to get a tissue from my pocket. "Are you going to be OK?"

"I don't think so." She whispered. "He's not sure if he's coming back."

"I want to say that I hate him but he's one of our best friends." I sighed. "And I'm going to miss him."

"I'm going to miss him too." She grabbed the box from my hands. "You should go to your boyfriend."
She pointed across the yard towards Caleb. He was walking towards us with Oliver beside him.

"I'm not going to leave you." I protested.

"You can come over my house tonight and we can eat a tub of ice cream and chocolate." She took a deep breath. "I just need to have few moments to myself. I'll take this back to mine and I'll give it to you later."

"Sam-" She grabbed the box from my arms and I reached towards her.

"I'm fine." When she looked at me though there were tears in her eyes.

"No you're not." I sighed.

She pulled away from my hands. "It is..."

I stared at her as my heart continued to sink. "I love you OK?"

She nodded. "I love you, I'll see you tonight?"

I nodded myself and watched her leave. By this time Caleb reached us.

"What's happened?" He asked. I looked at him to find Oliver and Caleb staring after her.

"Mason just broke up with her."

Oliver's eyes widened, "I'll go and talk to her."

"Oliver she doesn't-" But before I could say the rest of my sentence he was running after her.

I frowned and looked at Caleb. He grabbed hold of my hand. "You can leave if you want to."

"She wants time to herself." I sighed, "Why did he have to leave?"

"He's not coming back?"

"I don't think so."

Caleb's hand rested on my cheek and forced me to look at him. "Hey, every things going to be OK." His thumb wiped away a leaking tear. "We have each other."

"What about Sam?" I muttered. "She doesn't have him."

He shook his head. "She has us and Oliver."

My eyes widened as he grabbed my hand again and we started walking towards his car. "Do you think that Oliver-"

"I think that Oliver just might." He smirked.

"They'd be a good match."

He nodded as he wrapped his arm around my waste. I leaned against the car behind us. "I think that we make a good match as well." He grinned.

I smiled as he leaned down and touched his lips towards mine. I wrapped my hand in his, "You know that I love you right?"

His eyes lit up. "You do? Seriously!"

"You're a dork."

"I thought that we went through this. You're the dork." He grinned and squeezed my hand. "Everything's going to be OK."

I nodded as he opened his car door and I hoped in. He was right. Everything was going to be OK.
From the start of this year, I had been scared to be myself. Then out of pure luck I had found the guy of my dreams, he understood me more than anyone else and he loved me. Me. Not the blonde barbie that I thought he would end up with.

Through this year I had found out who I was and what I could achieve, plus I ended up with the perfect guy.

Caleb's eyes met mine. "You ready?" He grinned.

I grabbed his hand. "I'm always ready."

Sure this year was a roller coaster... but to end up with him....

I would fight with Mel all over again.

He was worth it.
