"Now what am I going to do with you?" Klaus asks tauntingly.

Suddenly, Stefan is pressed up against the wall with a stake in his chest.

Stefan groans in pain, slumping forward.

"Do you feel that? It's scraping against your heart. The slightest movement and you're dead." Klaus taunts.

"Klaus please stop." I whimper as tears escape me eyes, my hands still holding onto the desiccated body of Elijah.

Klaus turns his head to look at me. His face washes over with a pained expression as he takes in the state I'm in.

He doesn't get to say anything before Katherine speaks up. "He's just trying to help his brother."

"The witches said you had a cure. Make me a deal. Just give me the cure, and I'll do whatever you want." Stefan negotiates.

Klaus pulls out the stake, causing Stefan to fall to the floor.

He then walks over to the counter, putting the dagger on it, and pours himself a glass of blood.

"Trouble is I don't know if you'd be any good to me the way you are now. You are just shy of useless." He explains.

———

Stefan stays resting on the floor as Klaus walks over and crouches down to him.

"I heard about this one vampire, crazy bloke, always on and off the wagon for decades. When he was off, he was magnificent. 1917, he went into Monterrey and wiped out an entire migrant village...A true ripper. Sound familiar?"

In that moment I decided to use their distracting conversation to my advantage.

I quietly slip my hand closer and closer to the dagger resting in Elijah's chest.

"I haven't been that way in a very long time." Stefan explains.

My fingers lace around the handle of the blade.

"Well, that's the vampire I can make a deal with. That is the kind of talent that I can use when I leave this town." Klaus says.

Just as he finishes speaking I start pulling on the dagger.

In sudden flash I see a large hand enveloping mine around the handle. Except his is pushing down instead of pulling up.

My eyes shoot up to meet the hybrid's.

Fear floods through me like a giant wave crashing over my head.

"He's my friend." I say simply, my voice cracking.

Klaus's eyes soften as he smiles gently.

"I know, love. But right now I need him to be asleep for a little while. I promise I'll wake him up when the time is right."

I see nothing but sincerity in his eyes. My head automatically nods, a small tight lipped smile sneaking onto my face.

He holds out his hand in an offer to help me up.

I hesitate for a moment before deciding to take it.

He pulls me up gently, his free hand snaking around my waist, providing enough support to stand easily.

He guides me over to a seat, sending me a genuine smile before walking back over to the two very confused vampires.

It's not like I had any idea what was going on either.

Why was Klaus so kind to me? If anyone else tried to pull that dagger out, they'd be dead in an instant.

Why was I any different?
