VENUS WAS PRETTY SURE SHE WAS ABOUT TO PASS OUT. She stood beside Sam, listening to the doctor tell them that Dean had less than a month to live. Her hands were trembling and every breath she took was shakier than the last. Not a single thought in her head made sense except for the one that screamed that none of this was real and was only a shitty dream that she'd wake up from soon.

But as she followed Sam to Dean's room, that thought faded.

Dean lay in the hospital bed, his skin a dull grey and his eyes drained of its life and color. In his hand, he held the remote to the hospital room's tiny TV. He was lazily flipping through channels when they entered.

"Either of you ever actually watch daytime TV?" he asked them. His voice was weak despite his attempt at a joking tone. "It's terrible."

Venus couldn't even force a smile on her face.

They both moved to stand at the foot of his bed. "We talked to your doctor," Sam sharply exhaled.

"That fabric softener teddy bear?" Dean continued, ignoring him, "Ooh, I wanna hunt that little bitch down."

"Dean," Venus called for his attention, her jaw clenched.

Dean finally turned to look up at them, spotting the tears lingering in both their eyes. "All right, well it looks like you're gonna leave town without me."

"What are you talking about? We're not gonna leave you here," Sam protested, his voice threatening to break with each word.

"You better take care of that car. Don't let Venus drive her too much. Or I swear I'll haunt your ass."

Venus' left eye twitched. "Was that supposed to be funny?" she deadpanned.

"Oh, come on, it's a little funny," Dean shrugged.

Venus wanted to say so much yet couldn't. Every word she uttered brought her resolve closer to crumbling. She wanted to scream, sob, hit something. But she was using every ounce of strength she had to keep herself together, just like Dean was. He could see that. They were similar in that way.

A beat of silence passed between the three hunters. Sam turned away and looked out the hospital window, trying to will the tears in his eyes to not fall.
