Charles had arranged a game of paddle with Max, George and Lando for earlier today. I don't know what I'm going to do. I can't play paddle. I know badminton. Just not paddle.
"Good morning" I heard when I went down the stairs
"Good morning" I said in return
"Are you ready for our game today?"
"Are the girls coming?"
"I'm not sure I can ask though. There won't be enough girls to play"
"Oh then there's no point of me being there" Finally a way out
"Well the boys can just sub in then" The way out is now blocked again. Thanks Charles.
"Great. Can't wait to play"
We both had breakfast while starting to watch Stranger Things even though I'm not a huge horror fan. I'm definitely going to not sleep tonight.
We both did the washing from dinner and breakfast and after we got dressed into our paddle outfits.

I put my hair up in a high ponytail and put a little makeup. Like very little. I obviously don't have a racket so Charles lent me one of his.
When we entered the car he turned the radio on and the best song that could ever play came on. Of course I sang my heart out to Dancing Queen and at some point Charles joined as well with me. This was my birthday song when I was 17. I loved being 17 because I was one step closer to moving out from that shit hole. But that was the party...Nevermind
"Charles this is probably not the right time to tell you this" I said a few minutes after the song ended.
"What's up?" I look down and fiddle with my fingers "Its okay ma chérie, you can tell me"
"I don't know how to play"
"Paddle?"
"Yeah?" I say embarrassed
"That's okay. We'll teach you"
"You sure?"
"Yes of course" he placed his hand on my thigh "No need to worry about it. You have friends willing to teach you" he said brushing his thumb over and over and over again. My cheeks flushed. Then he moved his hand away.
There was a slight coldness replacing the shadow of where his hand once was. I never want that coldness again. His touch just makes the world different. It makes everything go away and it just being us.
After a few more songs, we had arrived. I look out the window and see everyone already there. What if I embarrass myself? What if I do something stupid? What if I fuck up my teammate? No need to worry about it. You have friends willing to teach you I take a deep breath as Charles opens the door for me. I'm not going to mess it up. I'm going to try my best.
"Hey you okay?" Charles knocks me out of my thoughts.
"Mhm. All good"
"You sure? You don't need to play that much if you don't want to. Just take it easy okay. Did you bring a bottle of water?"
"Yes I..." Why is it not in my bag? "Shit I left it on the counter"
"You mean this one?" He pulls out of his bag a bright blue bottle.
"Thank you Charles"
"I'm the one taking care of you for the week. You need to take it easy"
"Yet we are here about to play paddle"
"You'll be fine. I'll team up with you"
"You want to team up with me?" Every thought of school came into my head. Kids laughing at me as I entered the gates. Always with a new fresh cut somewhere. The drunken queen. That was me. No one wanted to be around me. Yet, I lived up to that name.
"Of course. What makes you think I don't?"
"No reason, just surprised"
"There's no need to be"
We picked up our bags and walk towards everyone. Max, George and Lando were all in one group and Carmen and Kelly in another. Of course I walked over to the girls.
"Hey ladies"
"Yay you came" Kelly said
"Of course I did. I'm not about to leave you both"
"Thank god you didn't. We still need another girl."
"Charles said he would pair up with me."
"Did he really?"
"Yeah. Why do you guys look so happy?"
"No reason" they both said in sync
"I've never played before so he said he would teach me" Their smiles grew wider "What are you smiling about? Tell me"
"You'll see sooner or later"
"Carmen pleaseeeee"
"She's not going to say anything and either am I"
Me, Charles and lando went to a separate court to help me while George and Max played a game against the girls
"It's not that difficult to comprehend. It's kind of like tennis"
"I don't play tennis lando. I play badminton"
"I love badminton"
"Then we have to play Charlie"
"Yes we do. Now let's start with the rules"

After about three practices I think I've got the hang of it. We'll find out now. Me and Charles Vs Max and Lando. They did promise to be a little kinder but I know that that could never happen. I take a deep breath. Let's do this. Lando served towards me and I hit it back. I HIT IT BACK. Then Max then Charles then Lando then me. This is amazing. How did I learn to play a game in 15 minutes.
After 4 hours of tournaments the ending was like this:
Max and Lando- 4 games won Max and George-1 game won Kelly and Carmen-3 games won Charles and Max- 4 games won Charles and Stella-2 games won Stella and Kelly-1 games won Stella and Carmen-2 games won
I think I'll stick with badminton
