The Vanishing

What would you do

If I disappeared?

What would you do

If I decided to go blank?

How would you live

If one day I made a choice

To forsake my life

And be invisible?

To vanish into nothingness

And be a wandering ghost?

To never hear anything from me again,

Not even a slice of a rumour

Of my life somewhere else?

Would you move on and live your life

Or keep your ringer on,

Hoping for my return?

Would you burn everything we had,

Because I no longer existed?

Or would you keep them somewhere,

Greying shells of our memories?

If one day, by random fate,

I return, seeking shelter on your porch,

What would you do?

Would you push me away,

Your heart unbridling the frustration and hurt?

Or would you take me with open arms,

Relief and love glimmering from you?

What would happen then?

What would you do?

I wrote this poem after watching Complete Unknown on TV last night. I was intrigued with the idea of someone disappearing from life and the effects for the people affected. So in a way, I wanted to think of a possibility where I can do that. But who knows?
