He couldn't move or say anything because of the ball gag in his mouth and rope around his body.
However, he could scoot just enough to "talk" to Milo, who was on the other side of the room.
He got Milo's attention and made certain hand movements, communicating with him in the only way he knew.
After being held captive for more than 2 years, they made up their own language using their hands. It wasn't as advanced as sign language, but it was something.
