Ok~~~~~~ I know EvErYoNe is excited about Grammar right??? 신난다!! ;P
Lets start of with.... Conjunctions!! Yay!!
And Or Butt!!. I mean But :)
And
It would be easier if koreans did it like english and have one word.... but nope. There is a BuNcH of words for And.
와, 과, 랑, 고, 그리고.We already learned that 고 and 그리고 is used to combine two sentences together. Then 와? 과? Is to combine nouns.
와 (wa) 과 (gwa) remember 는 and 은? 를 and 을? Yep. It's the same concept.
와 is used when there no 받침
과 is withEX:
남자와 여자.
형과 누나.랑 (laang is used more often.. in replace with 와 and 과. It is also used to say 'with'.
Im with my mom.
엄마랑 있어 (it-seo)But also used to combined nouns. You add 이 if there is a 받침 infront
Ex:
남자랑 여자
형이랑 누나But
그러나, 하지만, -지만, 데도
We already learned -지만. Close cousins 하지만 is also used to use but for two sentences, or to connect the independent and dependent clause, like 지만. But 하지만 is used after the period or comma.
I like kimbab. But I don't like seaweed.
난 김밥이 좋아. 하지만 김은 싫어.
nan-gim-bab-ee-jo-a. ha-jii-maan-gim-eun-sil-eo데도 is 'but' with similar concepts with 'even though'.
Even though I'm hurt, I played soccer. ~> I'm hurt but i played soccer.
난 아픈데도 축구를 했다.
naan-a-peun-de-do-chook-goo-leul-het-da
아프다 ~ hurt (aa-peu-da)그러나 is same as 하지만.
난 김밥이 좋아. 그러나 김은 싫어.
nan-gim-bab-ee-jo-a. geu-reo-na-gim-eun-sil-eoTo be honest.. I don't really know the difference. I just know that 하지만 is more common. I believe 그러나 is like a formal way for ADULTS. If youngers used 그러나 to an adult.. you might sound mature and old, but rude.
Or
아니면, 또는, 혹은, -나Combine nouns 나. This or that. 이거나 저거. (ee-geo-na-jeo-geo)
이거 ~ this
저거 ~ that
Same concept with 랑
Ex:
남자나 여자
형이나 누나또는 (tho-neun) < like through
It combines nouns but also combine commas
남자 또는 여자
남자나 또는 여자 ~ this is a bit confusing. Not many people use 또는혹은 (ho-geun) 아니면 (a-nii-myeon)
Both to combine nouns & sentences
남자 혹은 여자
남자 아니면 여자Or you like me?
혹은 내가 좋아?
아니면 내가 좋아?Again.. 또는 and 혹은 is rarely used. I hear adults use it once or twice. Usually used in formal situations.. for ex: in a presentation at your work.
But the more common is -나 & 아니면
Gosh! That was confusing... ―..―;;
