"And so may he awaken while all else sleeps. May the Moon be his sun and may the Sun be his call to slumber. Through our dutiful sacrifice, may Chernabog lead us to everlasting paradise. Rise, rise, rise!"

Thick blackness hung in the air surrounding the group of unrecognizable people, all wearing a strange mask. They chanted in unison, their voices echoing through the endless void that encased them. Perhaps the most horrifying feat of the entire scene was the body that lay below them, lifeless and draining of color by the second. They had set the body on a raised platform so it lay just above the earth, and had another small table beside it with various tools spread across its surface. Only, one was covered in blood; a small serving spoon. The blackness slowly enveloped every last chanting person as their voices faded until only the body was left in view. First, a finger twitched. Then, another. Finally, their entire hand gripped the side of the platform they lay on tightly until the gray knuckle turned white.

"None of you deserve paradise. I will lead you to the fiery pits of hell where your only paradise will be everlasting death. Only then should you even receive just a second of  relief before hellfire consume you again." And the person sat up. "You stole my eyes, now I reap your souls."

I woke up in a cold sweat, tears pricking the corners of my eyes. It took a few moments for me to regain my bearings, as my room was still nearly pitch black save for the night light Henry had-

Henry.

His death had taken a greater toll on me than I had anticipated, and for all the wrong reasons. I didn't find myself overly upset that he was gone, which caused enough guilt it practically ate me alive. The guilt was overbearing. It felt almost as if I had killed him myself.

It wouldn't be completely true if I said I didn't feel to blame for him dying. I should have forcibly checked him into rehab. I should have enrolled him in alcoholics anonymous or even online therapy, something. But I did nothing. And now, almost every night I was plagued with terrible nightmares that woke me up throughout the night. I guess tonight would prove to be no different. I sighed, rubbing the remaining tears from my eyes with my sleeve and pulled the covers off of myself, letting my legs dangle freely over the edge of the bed.

Bzzt. Bzzt.

My phone vibrated on the nightstand next to my bed. I gave a start at the sound , as I was used to keeping the device on charge in the kitchen just in case Henry would want to go through it. Old habits die hard I suppose.

A missed call from an unknown number. Must have been a wrong-number type of deal.

I set the phone on my bed. Surely I would lose it in the covers, but it wasn't like anybody would try to get in touch with me at such an hour. It was thirty-after three in the morning, and typically the only person to try and message or call me at such a time was...

I didn't want to think about him anymore. If there was one reliable way to forget, it would be in the tank of the toilet, as it always had been.

I hastily lifted the porcelain back and set it on the floor next to the toilet. As always, his mini shot bottles were there. They wouldn't be for long.

--Unknown POV---

A short and sweet assignment. I had decided to waste no time, and to scope out the home immediately. I always preferred to get a feel of the environment before I went in. It always made assignments easier if I had the upper hand, and knowing the twists and turns of their homes always made sure that I did. I wouldn't waste precious time clambering around their home trying to hear their heartbeat or their breathing quicken if I could already predict where they'd hide.
