Another shot fired.

Frank grabbed my hand and pulled me across the car’s dashboard to run out of his side of the door. I complied; hopping over the seats and tumbling out of the car.

I could hear more shots firing but they weren’t really processing in my head, everything had drowned out and gone grey, I was only focused on escape. I guess this is what you could call adrenaline.

We were running down the side of the dock now to find our way back to the street. I could feel my eyelids growing heavy and my body going numb, I don’t know why though.

“You need to run!” Frank screamed as my pace slowed down and he was almost dragging me along now.

Everything was going blurry, similar to the way it had when I fainted in the nurse’s office. But something was off this time; I could almost feel my life slipping away from me.

I forced my legs further, only to find they’d suddenly gave out on me and my face had met the pavement with a loud smack.

“LANA!” Frank screamed running up to me. I blinked, looking towards him and seeing double. What was happening?

I lifted my hands which had been clenching my side to see they were lathered in blood. My eyes darted down to where they were to see blood seeping through my shirt at an alarming rate. Was I shot?

Then, all of a sudden the initial pain and shock catapulted through my nervous system and I let out an agonizing scream.

“Oh god. Fuck. Hang in there Lana please, I’m going to get you out of here.” Frank picked me up bridal style and I felt every inch of my body writhe in pain. I shrieked, the bullet indefinitely going deeper.

It wasn’t like in the movies. There was no suddenly passing out and everything going black. I was awake for every second of it. I felt every last bit of the pain. I was fucking dying.

“Stay with me love,” Frank whispered through the pant he’d picked up from running.

“It hurts!” I cried.

“Shh. I know, we’re almost to the road just hold out a little longer. Focus on the pain to stay awake.”

“No! Let me go! It hurts too much!” I sobbed.

“I’m sorry Lana, I can’t do that.”

Frank clenched his jaw and picked up his pace, the motion causing more pain to rip through my side.

“I’m sorry. They’re catching up with us.” I glanced up to see his eyebrows had furrowed and he’d worked up a sweat.

“Frank, I’m so sorry-” I began crying.

“Don’t you apologize! Not a single part of this is your fault you hear me?”

I nodded, tears streaming down my face. I glanced to my right down the road. We were there. We actually made it. We were safe. Frank saved us.

Cars were passing back and forth down the road, far too fast for any of us to catch one.

“You can’t take me to the hospital-“ I struggled to get my words out, my consciousness beginning to fade out.

“You’re fucking insane. We’re GOING to the hospital.”

“We C-CAN’T Frank. No body.. can…know about… this….” My breath hitched and I felt my heart slow down, the pain lessening every time I exhaled.

“NO. NO no no stay with me Lana! Wake up!”

I shut my eyes, the unbearable pain finally fading away and an eternal sleepiness finally taking over my mind and soul.
