Chapter 2: Don't Call It a Fight, When You Know It's a War

The next morning the sound of my phone wakes me up. It's Dad, asking me again about how I have adopted here. I tell him it's the 8th time he's asked about it since I have been here for like 24 hours and beg him to give it a rest. He listens, thankfully.

As I end the call, the events of the previous night cross my mind, and for a second I feel like it all has just been a dream.

But I know it wasn't, so I just skillfully shove the thought away, hoping to never see the Mad Hatter and his sidekicks again.

After tossing around in bed for a while, I get up and take a quick shower before curling my hair and putting some clothes on. I go with a loose flannel shirt tucked inside a pair of black jeans that are ripped on the knees and a pair of dark red Converse.

Next, I pull a cap over my head, hook my sunglasses on my shirt, and after having a cup of coffee and my favorite strawberry muffins, leave for wanderings.

As I wait for the elevator to arrive, I search for some interesting places in Chicago online. When it finally does, I get in and press the first-floor button, waiting for it to move. However, a sneaker-covered foot sticks in between the elevator doors and stops it.

The doors open wide again, making me look up and immediately lose my breath.

There is a guy standing in front of me, one hand in the pocket of his jeans. He looks at me for a brief second, at least I feel him looking at me from behind the black shades he's wearing, before stepping inside.

He presses the first-floor button with his left hand, where I notice two silver rings on his long fingers- one on his thumb, the other on his pointer finger.

There is also a small tattoo between those fingers. "Catch the chaos", it reads, all in lowercase.

I turn my eyes away, now staring at the metal doors in front of us, examining him secretly through them and trying not to look like a creeper.

He is unusually handsome, the type of handsome you think wouldn't even have a double chin if he took a selfie from a very bad angle.

He's wearing dark shades over his eyes, so I can't see the color of his eyes, and yet, nothing can cover his sharp jawline and his straight nose.

He is also tall and lean, meanwhile built, with wide shoulders and what seems to be a hard chest and strong arms under his black oversized T-shirt. He has matched the T-shirt with a pair of dark jeans and to tell the truth, all the black color on him makes him look pale, in a very attractive way.

Add to that his black and messy hair, with some strands falling over his forehead, and you will get the total heartthrobs you see in the movies. Is he a model? Is he going for a photoshoot? Or is he just this flawless on daily basis?

The shades he's wearing get my attention again, making me keep guessing the color of his eyes. I think they might be dark, just like the whole aura hanging over his head.

As we keep staring at the elevator doors, I catch the hard expression on his face. He's scowling, giving out an I-don't-give-a-crap-about-anything-including-global-warming-and-pollution kind of vibe, and even that apparently looks intriguing on him. At one point, he notices me staring at him, at least I think he does, because his scowl turns into an "I-know-you-are-staring-at me-but-you-ain't-getting-any" kind of smirk, making me slightly roll my eyes and turn my head away from him.
