Chapter 23

Elena and Maddie were waiting in the car. The looked at each other for a moment.

"Let's go." Maddie said.

The two of them got out of the car and headed towards the back of the house. They ran down a flight of stairs, into a cellar. They were seen by a man standing guard and he walked towards. They saw Damon get to him first.

"Are you two insane?" He asked. They walk into the cellar and find Stefan.

"Elena. Madeline." Stefan said, weakly. " You shouldn't be here."

"They were supposed to stay in the car." Damon said. "Let's get you down."

"There's vervain on the ropes." Stefan said.

"Elena." Damon said. Elena let Stefan down. "All right, let's go." Damon said.

Maddie and Elena helped Stefan out of the house while Damon distracted the others. They carried him to the car.

Elena noticed the keys weren't in the ignition. "Stefan." She said.

All of a sudden, Frederick broke the window and pulled Stefan out of the car. "This is for Beth-Anne." He said before stabbing Stefan with a branch.

"And this is for torturing my father." Maddie said as she plunged a vervain syringe into his neck. He fell to the ground. Elena and Maddie rushed over to Stefan. Maddie pulled the branch out of her father. He was groaning in pain.

"Daddy." Maddie said, tears running down her face. "Please, get up." She noticed Elena's cut. "Elena, your wrist." Maddie said. "Give him your blood." Elena looked down at her wrist and put it to Stefan's lips.

"You guys need to run." Stefan said.

"We're not leaving." Elena said. "Take my wrist. You need more blood."

Stefan drank from Elena's wrist. They noticed Frederick getting back up. Maddie was going to go after him, but Stefan sped over to him and pinned him to a tree. He grabbed a branch and repeatedly stabbed Frederick.

"Stefan!" Elena said.

"Dad!" said Maddie.

Stefan whipped his head around and growled at them. His face actually frightened Maddie. He stopped and his expression softened. He went over towards Elena and Maddie, but Maddie sped off.

Later that night, Maddie was finishing taking a shower. When she walked out of her bathroom, she saw her dad sitting on her bed.

"Hey." She said. "Are you ok?"

"I'm fine." Stefan said. "Pretty much healed." Maddie nodded. "You shouldn't have been there today." Stefan said.

"You were in trouble." Maddie said.

"And you could have been killed." Stefan said. "I can't lose you."

"I shouldn't of had Elena give you her blood." Maddie said.

"No. No. No. That wasn't your fault." Stefan said. "You were just trying to save me. I'm sorry if I scared you in the woods."

"Are you going to be ok with the blood?" Maddie asked.

"I'll be fine." Stefan assured her.

"I'm glad you're ok." Maddie said.

"Me too." Stefan agreed.

Maddie leaned her head against his shoulder. "I love you, Dad." She said.

"I love you too, baby girl." Stefan said, kissing her on the top of the head.
