A couple nights later, Maddie was in her room. Since she was taken, she had been avoiding her dad. When they had gotten back to the house that day, aside from Damon, Jeremy had asked if she was ok. Everyone that she really cared about was concerned for except for the one that truly mattered. That should have been concerned for her the most.

Maddie was reading before going to bed. There was a light breeze blowing in from her open window.

All of sudden, she heard something whip around her window.

"Madeline." She heard someone whisper.

Maddie looked up to see Elijah and her eyes widened. She was about to say something loudly in shock, but Elijah sped over to her and covered her mouth.

"Please don't freak." He said. Maddie nodded. Elijah took his hand away.

"How are you alive?" Maddie asked. "I watched you die."

"It's complicated." Elijah said.

"How did you know where I lived?" Maddie asked.

"And how did you compel me?"

"I'm sure you have a lot of questions." Elijah said. "And I will answer them and explain everything, but not here."

"Why?" Maddie asked.

"I don't want them to hear us." Elijah said as he pointed to the floor, referring to Stefan and Damon. Maddie didn't say anything at first.

"Do you trust me?" Elijah asked.

Maddie thought for a moment before nodding.

"Come on." Elijah said, holding out his hand.

Maddie reluctantly took his hand. They jumped out the window and sped through the woods until they got the town.

Elijah led Maddie over to a bench and they both sat down. Neither of them said anything for a moment.

"So." Maddie said.

"First of all, I want to apologize for you getting taken." Elijah said. "I was only looking for the doppelgänger."

"Well, I was with Elena when it happened, so I guess I was just collateral damage." Maddie said.

"Well, forgive me for saying this." Elijah started. "But, I'm glad you were with the doppelgänger because if you weren't, I wouldn't have met you." Maddie didn't say anything. "Obviously, I didn't mean for you to get taken as well." He continued.

"I know." Maddie said. "So, are you going to tell me anything about you?"

"Well, you already know my name." Elijah said.

"How did you compel me?" Maddie asked. "Vampires can't compel other vampires."

"I'm not like the other vampires." Elijah replied.

"What do you mean?" Maddie asked.

"I'm one of the oldest vampires ever created." Elijah replied.

"Do I get more of an explanation than that?" Maddie asked.

"I will tell you my story, but I need you to keep between us for now. And I would appreciate if you would keep questions and comments to yourself until I'm finished." Elijah said. "Can you do that for me, please?"

"Yes." Maddie said. "So, what's your story?"

"My family lived in Mystic Falls during the Viking age. Obviously, it wasn't called Mystic Falls back then. Werewolves existed during that time and were around." Elijah started. "Some of my siblings would go out during the night to watch the werewolves turn, which my father forbade. When my siblings came after one night, my youngest brother was killed. After that, my father took matter of the situation. He had my mother, who was a witch, and another witch that was part of our family make an immortality potion. He made us all drink it, killed us all and forced us to drink human blood, which turned us into vampires. We were the first vampires to ever exist."

Maddie waited to see if he would say more.

"You may ask any questions you want." Elijah said.

"How were able to compel me and how did you survive the stake through your heart?" Maddie asked.

"Since we're the first vampires ever created, my family is different from the rest of you." Elijah continued. "We can compel other vampires and there's only one thing that can kill us."

"How many are there in your family?" Maddie asked.

"There was seven of us." Elijah started. "But, now there's six."

"You said one of your siblings was killed by a werewolf, right?" Maddie said.

"Henrik." Elijah answered. "The youngest."

"I'm sorry." Maddie said.

"Thank you." Elijah said. Maddie nodded. "I'm sure you want to ask what can kill me." Elijah said.

"I wasn't going to ask." Maddie said.

"But, I'm sure you're thinking it." Elijah said. Maddie nodded.

"If I tell you, can I trust you with the information?" Elijah asked.

Maddie looked up in surprise. "But, you don't even know me." She said.

"It doesn't matter." Elijah said. "I already trust you."

"But, why?" Maddie asked.

"Do you know what a soulmate is?" Elijah asked.

"Kind of." Maddie said.

"It's when two people are meant to be together." Elijah explained.

"Right." Maddie said.

"You're my soulmate, Madeline." Elijah said.

"Oh." Maddie said.

"So, would you like me to tell you what can kill me?" Elijah asked.

"You don't have to." Maddie said.

"I want the one person I trust to know." Elijah said. "If that's ok."

"Ok." Maddie said.

"The only thing that can kill me is a dagger dipped in white oak ash or a white oak stake." Elijah said.

"Why white oak?" Maddie asked.

"After we became vampires, we couldn't control our blood thirst and we started killing people. So, my father used a white oak to create weapons to kill us. We burned it down, so now all there's left ash from the tree." Maddie nodded. "Come on." Elijah said. "I'll take you back home."

The two went into the woods and sped to the boarding house.

"Thank you for telling me your story and for trusting me." Maddie said, once they arrived back at the boarding house.

"It was pleasure. Until we meet again, Madeline." Elijah said, kissing her on the hand.

Maddie turned to hide her blush. She jumped up to her window and climbing in. She watched Elijah speed off before going to bed.
