The living room is warm but the atmosphere is rigidly cold.
Aunt Eevie sits with Zaina, brushing her fingers through her long, silky hair.
"I'll set something on the stove."
Mother switches to Turkish whenever she's around us and Aunt Eevie.
I only switch when I'm alone with Suki.
I want to rush over, tell Zaina the good news, tell her not to worry, that she'll be safe with us.
But-
she turns to me
before I get the chance.
She's frowning and the fire in her eyes engulfs and o v e r w h e l m s.

She stands, whispers something to Aunt Eevie and heads upstairs- her eyes not leaving mine the entire way.
I follow, confused and feeling like I've done
something I should apologize for.
