Ann'e and I decide to
dedicate the day to planning
and sorting through what needs to be done.

It lifts a weight of my shoulders,
makes me feel safe from failure and falling behind.

By the end of the day,
the living room walls have
huge posters outlining our plan
for the next three weeks.

I crack open physics workbook,
swinging my legs languidly,
taking notes on the breakfast bar,
as ann'e cooks dinner.

A thought enters my head,

"Ann'e? How do you know so much
about...homeschooling?"

She smiles,
eyes cast down to the pot she's stirring.

"I always wanted to teach you girls myself.
I used to be a teacher, you know."

Her expression changes from fondness
to f r u s t r a i t i o n.

"But your father didn't trust me to do a good job.
So I never had the chance."

I look down at my physics book.
I'm two grades ahead of my class
and I guess that would be what Father would call
a 'good job'.

But I'm happy.
For the first time in what feels like forever,
I am happy.
