I pull out all of my school papers,

homework, assignments and certificates
slide across the dining room table.

Mother hums as she flicks through everything,

"This is...."

Disappointing? Sub-par? A let down?
I bite my lip as she looks up at me.

"I'm so proud of you,

how did I not know about this sooner?"

She holds up my English assignment

and points at the big, red (90%)
at the top.

I duck my head
and shrug,

"Honestly, I didn't want you to know.

Didn't want you to think I was
some sort of  f r e a k ."

Didn't want you to treat me like
some sort of trophy child.
