I haul my overnight bag
onto Zaina's bed,

she bumps my hip with hers as she passes,
grabbing her pajamas from under her pillow,

"Get comfy, yeah?
Want some hot chocolate?"

"Would I?
Is that even a question?"

I realize I'm grinning.

Grinning.

I'm happy, nervous and filled to the brim

with a tornado of butterflies
but strangely giddy.

Zaina rolls her eyes playfully,

"Then get downstairs and make some,
I'm not your hot chocolate slave."

before heading to the bathroom to change.

I stand there for a moment,
in the middle of my childhood friend's bedroom,

and take a deep breath.

Tonight, I'm going to talk.
A part of me tried to convince me to stay silent,
but the words rest in my lungs, begging me to let them out.

"Harmony?
Can you please come here?"

Aunt Eevie calls me from across the hallway,
her voice coming from her room.

I'm there in an instant,

"Yes?"

a.n. did my girl Harmony banter with her friend? is this a thing she's going to do now? now that she's almost a teenager???? can you believe she's almost 13 now? She's going to be in Year 9 soon, wow. I feel like she's actually my kid, is that weird? It probably is, since she's essentially 'me' but whatever, I'm very emotionally attached to all my characters!!
