Chapter Thirty One: Test

Rosabelle

I watch the rain patter down the window of the master bathroom. Zane is out in the house with the twins and my anxiety is through the roof, staring at the white stick on the counter.

Don't look until three minutes. Don't look until three minutes.

My eyes dart down at the text thirty second early and my heart lurches to my throat.

"Fuck." I whisper, snatching my phone off the counter.

I start dialing Vanessa quickly but I hang up.

Pregnant 1-2wks

Shit. I fucking knew it.

My period didn't come and I just knew, but how?

When have we had unprotected sex?

"Rose?" Zane calls.

I grab the test and chuck it. I hear it clatter on the floor somewhere and I whip around just as Zane comes walking into the bathroom.

"What are you doing?" He asks.

"Nothing." I squeak.

"O...kay." He pauses. "I think they want some milk. It's bedtime."

"Right." I clear my throat.

"I have to pee." He adds.

What if he finds the test?

"Don't pee in here!" I cry out.

"Why?" He asks.

"I um..." I lick my lips. "The toilet is broken."

"What?" He asks. He starts to step into the bathroom but I block his way. "Rose, what are you hiding?"

"Nothing." I say quickly. "Don't pee in here."

"Rose, this is our bathroom." He insists.

"Just pee somewhere else. Please?"

Both babies are reaching for me.

He hesitates, narrowing his eyes at me.

"Whatever it is, I'm going to find out."

"I know."

"So something is going on?" He asks. "Are you okay?"

I take the twins from him and walk into the bedroom. He follows me.

"Rose, what's wrong?" He insists.

"Nothing."

"Rosie, are you absolutely sure that nothing is wrong?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you say that I'm going to find out?" He persists.

"Because you will." I reply.

He sits with me as I start to nurse the twins for bed.

"So something is going on?"

"Yes Zane, something is going on."

"So why won't you tell me?" He whines. "Can I guess?"

"Sure, go ahead and guess."

"You're pregnant."

My eyes snap up to his.

"What?"

"Are you pregnant?"

"Why do you think I'm pregnant?"

He smiles. "Because you left the box on the counter. So are you? Are you pregnant?"

I never wanted more than two children, but my husband loves kids, and I love my husband.

I'm loving the life we have, and he wants more kids, so I'll give them to him. I'm sure they'll make me happy.

"Yes Zane, I'm pregnant."

His hands slap over his mouth.

"You are?" He whispers.

"I am.

"Oh my god." He squeaks. "I'm gonna be a Dad!"

"You already are a Dad." I chuckle.

"But I'm gonna be a Dad again?!"

"Yes, you're gonna be a Dad again."

"Oh my gosh, I bet it's octuplets!"

"It better not be octuplets!" I exclaim.

He laughs and leans down for a kiss.

"I'm just kidding, but I guarantee it's more than one."

"No, I think it's one."

"I don't think so Rosie, and I'm usually right with these kinds of things. My money is on two boys."

Oh god, my hands are going to be so full, but oddly enough, I can't wait.
