(This one won’t take long to break.)
The certainty in Dale’s thought rankled Eli. Leira was his daughter, and to be a Guardian was her birthright.
(Don’t be so sure.)
Dale flinched at the ferocity of Eli’s reply and flicked his violet tail. He smiled bashfully. Despite himself, Eli returned the smile. He couldn't help it - Dale always won him over.

It wasn’t like them to argue. The importance of the day settled heavily between them. Eli shuddered as he felt his friend remembering the last attack on their Herd. He slowed as they swam, allowing Dale to project the memory before them. It was so old that it flickered and spluttered in the waters. The Mer inside it looked faded, worn. They watched, transfixed, as another Herd massacred their own. Eli shook his head. He'd seen the memory so many times, he felt numb to it. They all did now.

It was why fewer Guardians were being born with the skill to protect the Sources. It was why today was so important. It was why Leira could not fail.
