I flicker in and out of consciousness, struggling to hang onto life. At one point I can hear the beep of a heart monitor and I can see Kate standing in front of me, tears streaming down her face. Laurel puts an arm around her shoulder and leads her out of the room. I want to shout, "don't go!" But my mouth won't move. Others come and pay their respects. My friends all show up and I'm helpless to do anything. Finally when Kate comes in alone and kneels at the foot of my bed crying can I take it no longer. I surge against the paralysis and sit up with a start, gasping for breath.
