Chapter 16 – Love Spells and Trusting

“How could she like him?!” Jonah yelled while pacing the floor in his two bedded dorm. Nathan lay at his bed next to the window arms behind his head while staring at the ceiling. Jonah had been talking about the same subject all Sunday morning.  His roommate had been ignoring him for quite sometime but it was mostly amusing to him and pathetic.

Jonah continued his rant. “He’s so-”

“Perfect for her?” Nathan interrupted.

“No!” Jonah yelled. “So –”

“Handsome?”

“Shut up!” Jonah yelled at him in rage. Anger was flaring through his eyes like he was ready to explode but deep in his expression was sadness and grief, the heartache practically eating him alive.

“Oh, I’m sorry bro.” Nathan said in a teasing tone. “I just needed some clarification.”

“I thought you had my back.” Jonah spat out. “How can you sit there and mock me?”

“Sorry to burst your magical bubble bro.” Nathan replied with a sigh. “But there are hundreds of other girls at the academy for you to choose from, I just don’t see the point in you getting depressed over this one girl.”

“None of them can even compare.” Jonah whispered while sitting on the floor. His back touched the wall while his knees came to his chest, misery leaking from his face. Nathan sat up at the bed with a smirk while shaking his head.

“She’s a small chested first year.” Nathan replied. “I don’t see anything extraordinary about that.”

Jonah looked at him in disgust.

“What?”

“You’d be an idiot to not see how beautiful she is.”

“Okay, she’s pretty.” Nathan admitted while scratching his head. “I guess.”

“She’s perfect for me.” Jonah muttered under his breath. “Giselle, the simple way her name is spoken, the way her laugh echoes into my chest, the way she walks, talks, smiles, breaths, the way her reddish brown hair flares in the wind until your eyes meet and –”

“Not trying to interrupt this outburst of obsession but um, Shakespeare wants his line back.” Nathan said before biting his lip to hold in a bitter laugh.

Jonah glanced at him, eyes puppy dog like.

“Damn.” Nathan said. “This has to be serious.”

“It’s cool.” Jonah muttered. “If you were in my shoes, I’d be doing the same exact thing, making fun of you till you saw the end of it.”

“True.”

“But this is different Nate, and I just don’t know what I’m feeling.” Jonah replied. “It’s like this flame in my chest.”

“Isn’t it such a coincidence that her element is fire?”

Jonah’s eyes narrowed at him. “Why are you so dimwitted?”
