27. Angel for an Angel

"Jo? Jo?!"

Nothing is hurting, but I remember that I'm gonna kick Dean's ass when I find him.

I open my eyes, and Sam's face swims into view. I blink rapidly, and he's more into focus. I start, but Sam holds me.

"Easy, easy," he tells me. "What happened?"

"Dean," I rasp, coughing. I look to my right. The chair is present, but it's overturned. There's no Gadreel, but there's blood that suggests he was here once. "No..." I look at Sam worriedly. "Oh God, no." I jump out of Sam's arms, picking my batons up off the floor in the process. I look around wildly for my older brother.

"Dean!"

I run after Sam the minute he says our brother's name. We find Dean on the other side of the factory, looking to be unconscious. I want to feel some sort of justice has been served seeing this, but right now I'm more worried about Gadreel. Not that I like him, he's our only good intel, and if Dean's killed him...

I find Gadreel an unconscious, bloody mess near Dean's form. I kneel down beside the knocked-out angel, feeling for a pulse. He's still alive.

"Dean," says Sam. I watch as he gets Dean awake. "Hey! Are...are you okay?"

"Yeah," Dean mumbles. I see his right hand is bloody. "Yeah, you got to stop asking me that."

"I've been calling you and Jo. I mean, I know why she didn't answer me, but w-why didn't you, uh..."

"Sam," I say softly, gesturing towards Gadreel's body. I look at Dean with a scorching look.

"He won't talk," says Dean, looking at the unconscious body at my side.

"I figured," says Sam.

Dean looks desperately at our little brother. "He wanted to die, and I was gonna kill him. I was. But then I stopped 'cause I know we need him to talk."

"Then why did you attack me?" I demand.

Dean looks at me. "I didn't want you hurt, because I knew you'd get in the way."

This is for your own safety, Jo.

"Dean, Jo, listen," Sam says, his tone urgent. "Metatron has Cas. He's offering up a trade."

My mouth parts a little in horror. I feel my blood boil. Great. Well, Metatron must've found out somehow that we've got Gadreel. Why else would he have taken Cas? I pale slightly.

"We can't trust Metatron," says Dean.

"I-I know that. Obviously. But look, this is the first time we're gonna know for sure where Metatron is. Let's take Gadreel to the meet-up, make the exchange, and then trap Metatron."

"This calling for another holy fire circle?" I ask.

"It's the only way we'll trap him, Jo."

"When's this supposed to go down?"

"Six tomorrow, or depending on what time it is now, today."

"Where?"

"The hotel Cas is staying at."

I look down at Gadreel. As much as I don't want him out of our hands, it's Cas's life we'd be risking. I'd kept him safe when I took him in when in Rexford. I'd fail him if I disagreed with this plan.
