I was roused from sleep by music, my partially awake brain identified the voice as halsey's, it was my ringtone, "still learning". I languidly checked my phone's screen. It displayed "favorite girl", it was my best friend and ex neighbor, Thelma.

"Hello, how's it going?" I asked in a raspy voice.

"Were you snoozing? Dumb question. You probably were. I'm sorry I called so early. I was just missing you so much" she gave a plaintive cry

"It's alright, I've missed you too". I massaged my eyes with round sluggish fatigued motions.

"We don't converse nearly as frequently as we used to, I guess distance is beginning to take it's toll on us, sadly." She delibrated

"I guess so, it'll improve hopefully. Once i settle down and become adept with my new environment and school, I'm sure our friendship will pick up it's pace".

"So how's school?, made any new friends?. Of course you have. You're like a people magnet. That's one peculiar characteristic of yours I wouldn't mind possessing, to be candid with you." She disclosed

"You called me by this ungodly hour to flatter me" I laughed

"It's not flattery, if it's the truth, we all miss you to be honest." She sighed wearily

"And I miss you all too, I've made a friend or two over here but it's not the same as the old crew". I stifled a yawn craving the delectable embrace of a peaceful sleep

"You see just on the first day of school you've made friends, you'll make more as time goes on besides not everyone resumes on the first day of school." She said in a knowing tone

"That's true, that's very true" I agreed

"Are the guys in your school hot ? I'm sure they must be all over you and even if they aren't they'll be soon." She giggled

"No boy is all over me" I answered sharply.

I couldn't let her have even an inkling of an idea that any guy was interested in me. It would only lead to more questions, questions which could lead to malignant consequences. Thelma could be very annoying at times with her excessive compliments but that didn't mean I wanted to put her in harm's way. I still wasn't fully aware of what havoc cole's unstable mind could think of to wreck on her.

"Alrighty then, if you say so. I'll take your word for it."

"Any current scoop ?" I queried

"Only bad news" she sighed wearily

I gasped" what happened ?"

"Lucky got hit by a stray bullet in the shoulder during a shootout between the bloods and the snake head altercation. He had gone out to get some late night snacks. He was darn lucky it was his shoulder and not his head or heart." She exhaled deeply

"That's awful!" I exclaimed

"That's not all. Praise, you probably don't know her, do you?" She questioned

"No, I don't"

"She's a thirteen year old girl who lives about nine blocks away from your house. She got raped by festus, that twenty four year old crackhead on grimy locs. Whenever I have the misfortune of coming across the revolting thing, i get the strongest urge to bash in his face with a metal chair. The smug nitwit."

"He's walking free? He hasn't been reported to the police and apprehended?" I asked aghast

She burst into a ear-piercing, lengthy cackle, I interrupted her with a "What's funny?"

"You, you're what's funny" she replied obviously struggling to catch her breath and stopping in between words.

"You've been binging lots of movies and tv shows haven't you ? This is the real world, we're on our own."
