The Departed

FLASHBACK, NEW ORLEANS - 1919

"Lola, trust me when I say you have absolutely nothing to worry about when it comes to Klaus." Marcellus explains to his friend as they walk along the streets of New Orleans, "He absolutely adores you, I'm pretty sure he would die before he chooses anyone over you." He laughs, "I would go as far to say he would probably get himself killed if it meant he was protecting you and you know he isn't like that for anyone."

But Marcel's kind words weren't really for Klaus, after all, he's refusing Marcel to be with the woman he loves: Rebekah. No, the words were there to comfort his dear friend, Lola, who's always been there for him since she arrived in the city.

Marcellus brought Lola out for a walk on this sunny afternoon after she had an altercation with Klaus. Lola sighs as she plays with a part of her dress, "I know that. But I just see the way that red headed witch looks at him and she is practically undressing him. It's infuriating."

"That Genevieve has been like that with every man she's came across. I promise you that you have nothing to worry about." Marcellus assures her.

Lola grins in his direction as they continue to walk, she links his arm, "Have I ever told you how much I appreciate you, Marcellus. If you weren't apart of this family we would have probably killed each other."

Anxiety rushes through him as he thinks about what he and Rebekah had done the night previous, something that was going to change this family, forever.

Marcellus clears his throat as he picks up the pace now the compound is coming back into view. He notices Lola doesn't follow, he turns to see her staying in the same spot, "Are you coming?"

Lola's famous warm and bright smile appears on her face, a glimmer in eye that she has an idea brewing, "I'll catch up with you. I need to get an apology gift for Nik."

Lola continues down the street to then arrive at a stall in the market that sells unique paints. There are only a few colours that Klaus has not been able to add to his collection of many. Which is why Lola is taken aback when she spots one of the most rare colours that Klaus has been searching for, glaucous. Not too light to be considered pale blue and not too dark to be considered navy, it's fits right in the middle. The most beautiful blue.

Without hesitation, Lola buys the pot of paint and heads back to the compound with a spring in her step. As she looks up and looks through the crowd she notices a familiar face, a face she hasn't came across for 33 years, Damon.

The smile on her face grows even wider as she rushes through the crowd and pulls Damon in for a long hug, "Damon! You're here!" She pulls away from the hug to see her older brother smiling back down at her, "You're actually here."

"I'm here." Damon repeats, "It's good to see you, little sister."

Lola pulls Damon in for another hug, worried if she lets go this will all just be a dream, "I can't believe you're actually here." She pulls away once more, then taking hold of his hand as they walk through the crowds, "You finally found me, then? You must meet everyone here!"

Damon pulls Lola's hand back as he comes to a halt, making Lola come to a halt. She turns to look at him confused as guilt begins to wash all over his, "I didn't actually come here to find you." Lola's face drops, as does her hand from his. Making Damon step closer to her starting to panic, "But this worked in our favour!"

Lola narrows her eyes at her brother, "So what are you doing here?"

"I heard there are witches here that can help with our situation with Katherine." Damon explains, making Lola scoff, "We can finally free her from the tomb, Lola!"

"It's been 55 years, Damon. You've got to let all of this go!" Lola exclaims as she rolls her eyes.

Damon's exterior now becomes hard and cold, "It's okay for you, isn't it? You're happy. Making a new life for yourself here, forgetting about your real family."

Lola stands up straight, becoming defensive, "Hey, don't you dare spin this around onto me! I was there for you! I was there for you through it all, was Stefan? No. I was! You know everything that happened with Dominic, him leaving without even saying goodbye on our wedding day. That broke me, I needed a fresh start. You could have been apart of this fresh start if you weren't so hellbent on getting Katherine out of that god damn tomb!"

"This is your fresh start?" Damon's words now full of venom, "Walking around this city like you own the place, buying what?" He snatches the bag out of Lola's hand, he scoffs when he looks in it and letting out a scornful laugh, "Paint? Your fresh start involves paint? What you going to do? Paint yourself a new family? How about paint yourself a new man who's just going to leave you like the other one did?"

Lola grits her teeth, fighting back tears. Not wanting to reveal how much Damon's words hurt her. Instead she slaps Damon across the face, hard. He stumbles back as he holds his red cheek, looking over to Lola almost shocked at the strength his little sister suddenly has.

Lola steps closer to him, "Stay away from me."

Lola turns her back on him to continue walking but then feels something pierces her back. She gasps in pain, stepping back slightly to fall into Damon's arms. He leans towards her ear, "I plan to." He seethes.

He rips whatever piece of wood out of Lola's back making her stumble forward. She turns around to see Damon no where to be seen. But something still isn't right, it's as though there's still a piece of wood stuck in her back.

She holds onto the brick wall beside her to keep her balance as she winces in pain at the feel of the wood slowly moving closer to her heart. Luckily she is right around the corner from the compound, she rushes there and barges into it.

"Nik!" Lola shouts out as she collapses onto a chair, "Nik help me!"

Klaus rushes out to where Lola is sat, worry all over his face, "What happened?"

"There's...something...moving towards...my heart." Lola breathes out, gasping for breath. Each breath as painful as the next, it's like each breath moves the shard of wood closer to her heart.

Not needing to hear anything more, Klaus pushes his hand into the gash on Lola's back making her scream out in pain.

Klaus places his other hand against Lola's hands, letting her squeeze it to channel her pain, "I'm sorry, sweetheart. This will be over soon."

Just like that Klaus removes the piece of wood, no longer than an inch out of Lola's back. She sighs with relief as she leans back in the chair, faintly smiling as she looks up at Klaus, "Thank you."

Klaus crouches down beside her, trying not to show his anger, ready to tear apart whoever did this to his love, "Tell me what happened."

Lola explains everything, explains how it was her own brother who did this. How this happened because Lola was moving on with her life and not stuck in the past like he is.

As if Klaus didn't feel enough anger, after hearing this his anger begins to grow more and more as he stands up, clenching his fists. Lola notices this and stands up next to him, placing her hands on either side of his face, "Look at me. I'm fine, okay? We just need to forget this ever happened."
