Quickly, I follow Trever, my new work bestie, around the store. "Why do you walk so fast?" I ask him, hurrying along.

Trever chuckles, glancing back at me. "I don't walk fast. You're just short." He teases.

I scoff in response. "What does my height have to do with anything?" I harshly question.

Trever finally stops in the dog food aisle. He hands me the little tablet we use to check our inventory. "Your legs are shorter so you have shorter strides than I do." Trever clarifies, smiling down at me.

I narrow my eyes at him. "How tall are you, freak?" I playfully ask.

Trever isn't offended, just laughing. "Six five." He casually tells me as he starts showing me how to work the tablet. "What about you?" He smirks, nodding to me.

I stare down at the tablet. "Next question." I grumble. I quickly ignore Trever's taunting laughter at my response.

I started at the pet store a few blocks from Alex's apartment not too long ago and Trever has basically been assigned to me, showing me what to do and how to do it. The other people here just didn't want to do all that. I'm lucky Trever so happily agreed or else I'd be alone.

So, he's basically become my work best friend.

"Excuse me," A woman suddenly calls. I quickly twirl around and look at her, a little startled.

I smile down at the little girl gripping the woman's shirt, hiding a little. I offer a little wave before looking at the woman again. I can't bring myself to make eye contact. "Hi." I greet her. "How can I help you?" I ask, doing just what Trever told me to do.

"Can you help us out with the hamster things?" The woman awkwardly asks, making a little gesture with her hands. She seems disgusted but her daughter seems excited.

"I can help you with that." Trever cuts in, stepping up behind me. He offers a sweet smile. The woman smiles back at him and nods, turning around to walk towards the hamsters.

Trever follows her, turning to walk backwards so he can look at me. He makes a little grossed out face, like he doesn't want to touch the hamsters anymore than the woman does.

The face he does makes me laugh. He smiles, seeming satisfied as he turns around and hurries after the woman.

Once I'm sure no more customers are around, I reach into my back pocket and take out my phone, finally being able to check it. It buzzed a few times while I was talking to Trever, but I couldn't answer.

I smile, realizing it's Alex. My smile fades a little when I see he was asking if I wanted to have lunch with him on our breaks. It's a little too late for that now.

I reply to him anyway, telling him we can do it another time and that I'm sorry I didn't respond in time. Alex replies quickly and with a response I thought he'd give me. He tells me it's okay and that he loves me. He also says he'll see me after work. I smile, texting him back with a similar message.

"Who're we texting?"

I jump, quickly looking over at Trever with wide eyes. I scoff. "Oh my god, you scared me." I huff, glaring at him. Trever smiles. "How'd you finish so quickly?" I question. I wasn't on the phone for that long.
