The music wrapped around me like a warm blanket, making everything so warm. My voice flowed out like rich honey to the dark piano track. I wondered how the lights hit my melanin, my red dress. I wondered how Andre looked at me right now, sitting at his judge's desk. I didn't even register what any of them looked like. I guess I blocked it.

My voice started off in the lower register Annie had trained for the beginning, before I broke out into the first belt for the chorus, singing the lyrics with such ferocious passion I didn't realize I had inside of myself.

Once it got to the second verse, I made sure to capture the soul into the song, before I broke out into the high note. I loved how it slipped from my throat seamlessly like it was always supposed to be there.

This, this, was why I sang.

It was just me and the music.
