It took him a few seconds to process what she had just said.

He also noticed that she was holding an umbrella in her hand.

"... Why?" he said.

She tilted her head slightly as though listening to the raindrops.

"Well, because we're heading the same way. And because my shift's over.
The day before yesterday, they hired a new part-timer.
I can go home earlier from this night on," she explained.

He stared at her, unsure of what to say.

Hashimoto Rie glanced sideways and brought the umbrella over her head.

Then, she stepped into the rain,
splashing into a puddle.

She turned to look at him.

"Coming?"

He stared.

Then he opened his mouth.

"... Stop being so familiar with me," he said coldly.

At that, she only grinned.

"But aren't we friends now?" she asked. "Shouldn't walking together be a normal thing?"

His grip on his strap tightened.

She was right, of course. He couldn't just forget about her request.

He hesitated for a moment, troubled by what to do.

Then, very slowly,
he stepped forward.

Hashimoto Rie's expression brightened.

He looked away.

Around them, the rain was as dull as ever.
