He finished the story at the crossroads.

With those two final words,
a thinning silence came over them.

Hashimoto Rie did not speak for a few moments.

Then, a short pause.

"That... was the end?" she asked in a whisper.

"Yes. It was." he answered.

Rie blinked a few times.

"That was... so... so... the boy chose to die at the end? He decided on death?"

He nodded.

Rie closed her mouth. Then she opened it again.

Her expression seemed to say that she had something she wanted to voice out.

She did not utter a word, however.



Rie stared at him with a look of awe.

He looked back at her.


Suddenly in that moment, underneath the light of the gradually setting sun, an urge came over him.

It was the same feeling as that day in the cafe, the first time when he had made the mistake of asking her a question.

He knew he shouldn't.

Yet still,
somehow,
he did.


He parted his lips and asked quietly. Reluctantly.




"Can you... teach me how to be happy?"
