・・・ xxv ・・・

It had been an hour since then.

There were still no signs of him.

If he was lost, Leo could have easily contacted them.

Rie had been sending him text messages.

There had been no reply.

A feeling of dread began to stir.

He was beginning to think that there was something wrong.

He recalled the way Leo had hesitated on his way out.
The way he had seemed like he was about to say something.

"Something is wrong."

But... what?

A moment later, his phone suddenly vibrated in his pocket.

Slowly, he took it out.

A single text.

On the screen, the name of the sender was displayed.

A ridiculous name that he had forgotten to change.

[ Leon the Lion ]

・・・ xxvi ・・・

Sorry!! Something came up and it turns out I can't go. Please tell Rie I'm so sorry.

On the other hand, I hope you two will have fun during your date!!!!!! Good luck!

・・・ xxvii ・・・

He stared at the screen.

Once again, his eyes read over the contents of the message.

"Ao-kun, what are you looking at?" Rie asked curiously, leaning next to him.

He turned to look at her, stepping away without a thought.

Rie noticed this and blinked in surprise.

Silence.

Timidly, he shook his head.

"... It's Leo," he explained. "He sent a text."

Rie's eyes widened.

"He did? What did he say?"

Hesitantly, he held the phone out to her.

Hashimoto Rie silently read Leo's text.

After a moment, she blinked again.

"Eh...? He can't come?"

He nodded once.

"That's surprising. I thought he of all people would be looking forward the most to this..." Rie trailed off.

A look of concern passed over her.

"Could there be something wrong..?"

He looked down at his screen.

Leo.

His grip tightened around the phone.

His throat felt dry.

The unsettling feeling seemed to be worse.

Something... is wrong.

・・・ xxviii ・・・

They were silent for a few seconds.

Neither didn't seem to be sure what to do or say.

In the end, before any one of them could even say anything,
they were interrupted when the crowd near the beach began to stir.

Rie looked up. Her face suddenly brightened.

Reluctantly, Ao followed her example.

Beyond the horizon, a thin line of yellow had started to appear.

Slowly, the colors in the sky shifted and lightened.

Rie laughed quietly, grinning.

"Look, Ao!"

He did.

Sunrise had arrived.
