After everything I'd heard about Lex's father, I'd expected him to be some great and terrible man. I'd envisioned a tyrant, someone who wore his despicable acts on his face.

But while Miriam had her bitchiness plastered all over her rigid features, Richard Coleman's cruelty was impossible to guess. He even seemed sweet, and it wasn't just because of my affection for old people. No, the man had something endearing, but I wasn't letting it fool me.

Maybe it was because I was biased, maybe it was because his gray eyes were the same as Lex's, because despite his wrinkled face aged by the years, I could see the man I loved in him. I hated this. I hated that Lex looked so much like the man who'd broken him.

His hair was entirely white, with no traces of youth left in it, but I could guess it used to be dark, because of his eyebrows that still held some of it. Despite his age, he had a strong build, holding himself straight, his posture that of a young man.

"Miss Walker, we finally meet," he declared, offering his hand for me to shake. I took it, ignoring the rush of disgust that flooded me when his fingers clasped around my hand.

"Mr. Coleman, I didn't know you'd be among us." I wasn't telling him it was a pleasure to meet him because it seriously wasn't.

"Call me Richard, please." Eh, I wasn't calling him Richard. Maybe Dick could work out. "And it was a last-minute decision. A deal was closed early, so I decided to attend the gala."

I nodded, my lips pinched. I literally had nothing to tell him other than a big fat "Go fuck yourself, old fart." No one had anything to tell each other apparently, and the silence stretched. Miriam was the one who broke it.

"Would you mind walking us back to our table? Bethany has been asking about you, Alexander. I think she'd love to catch up with you for a moment."

His hand was still on my back, and its pressure increased slightly. He was done for the night and needed us to go. "My headache is getting worse," I pretended, turning to Lex.

It took him a second to get where I was going with this, and something lit up behind his eyes. "Maybe another time," he told his mother.

"Oh, come on. It'll only be a minute."

Well, of course my suffering was of no importance to Miriam Coleman. Offering Lex an encouraging smile, I nodded. We'd walk them to their table, say hi to Bethany, and get the fuck out of here. Honestly, I'd rather have met Idris Elba than whoever Miriam's friend was. Fuck that turn of events...

Miriam hooked her arm around her son's, a gesture much more warm and maternal than what she'd used me too, and she led the way toward their table. I was left walking behind with his father, crossing my arms in front of me to make sure he wouldn't offer to hold one. He walked slowly, and I wasn't sure if it was his age or an attempt at setting some distance with the others.

"So, I'm told my son is smitten with you?" he asked as soon as the others were too far to hear.

"I think smitten is an understatement."
