Varian felt like he was going crazy. He was stuck on this one part of his research, and no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn't get the answer.

Aggravated and frustrated, he decided to go out for a bit to cool off. It had been a month since he first met the two Princesses, 'Flynn Rider' and their friend, but he has grown to be quite fond of (Y/N) and was hoping to maybe run into her.

He had seen her around a lot and she seemed so happy while helping out the people of her kingdom and travelers. They had a few nice chats and he really enjoyed her company.

She was like... a sister? Oh god no. He physically shook his head to get rid of that thought. Varian took it back as soon as he thought it. No, that would be weird.

That reminded him, what was also weird was how both her and Cassandra simply disappeared from time to time. He wondered what they were doing. He already saw Cass rarely, and the distance only made him crush on the lady-in-waiting harder. They do say that distance makes the heart grow fonder.

Maybe he could ask (Y/N) for some advice soon, he planned to do something special for the woman that captured his heart, and he knew she'd be of great help.

He purposely walked around the places (Y/N) liked to visit frequently so he wasn't too surprised to see his dear friend (Y/N) playing with his favourite racoon just outside of the castle, near her cherished 'lucky fountain' as she called it.

She saw him approaching so she waved.

"Hi Varian!"

"Hi Princess."

"I've told you, call me (Y/N)!"

"I guess old habits die hard."

He grinned and sat down. He stared holes into the ground as he grimaced, thinking about his research project again.

"What are you so angry about?"

"Nothing."

"So you expect me to believe you're just, glaring at the ground for no reason?"

He stayed silent, contemplating his answer.

"I'm just, not getting anywhere with my current project. Something is missing, but I just have no clue what it is!", he exclaimed, arms thrown into the air.

"I try and try and change and change but noooooooooo. Nothing! Absolutely nothing! I haven't gotten anywhere! It's like I'm walking in circles."

"Well, maybe take a short break and take a look at it later. Sometimes you're so concentrated on something, you overlook the obvious. You just need to take a step back. You sound like you have a creative block"

"A 'creative block'?"

"What, you mean to tell me after all the amazing things you've achieved you've never had a creative block?"

His clueless look told you all you needed to know.

"We'll, I'm sure you understand what I mean"

"Me? Having a creative block?"

"Well, yes. Anyone can get it. I paint and I get artblock pretty often."

"Wait, you paint? I thought-"

"Yeah, I know. It's Punzel's thing. Rapunzel paints everywhere so that's nothing new. I mostly draw when cooped up in my room, where. I'm alone, just me, myself and I. So no wonder no one knows that I do arts."

Varian sheepishly scratched his neck and looked away. He felt bad that he never bothered to ask her about her hobbies while going on rants about his.

(Y/N) actually loved to listen to his little rants, but he didn't know that.

"Anyway, I've got to go meet up with Cass."

"What are the two of you up to?"

"Oh, she's teaching me how to fight!"

Varian choked on air.

"You fighting? No no no no, you can't fight!"

He looked at you in panic.

"Gee, thanks for believing in me."

"No, it's too dangerous!"

"I believe that's my decision to make. The others fight too anyway."

"But you're not them!"

"What's that supposed to mean? You don't think I can handle myself?"

In that moment, Varian's words got stuck in his throat. He wanted to scream, to tell you that he couldn't bear to lose you, that he was too scared for your safety.

But the way he felt was foreign to him so strange and new that it scared him. He didn't know you for long, but you were already one of the most important people to him, it terrified him.

He wanted to tell you that he was worried and scared, to shout it out, cause if you were to protect Corona with the others, god knows what could happen. But he couldn't muster up anything.

He frantically thought of something to say, to reassure you that you were strong, the strongest person he knew.

While you weren't as great at combat as others, yes, you had this gleam in your eyes. He only knew her for about a month, but he knew that (Y/N) was a girl who was ready to protect anyone and anything anytime, no matter what it cost. That selflessness was a strength. She would listen, tend to and help anyone around her without much thought. She could lighten up the mood, cheer up anyone just by being there. She was reliable, hardworking and she truly cared.

She would go great lengths and even sacrifice her own feelings. That was the (Y/N) he knew. That was what made her the strongest to him.

But this selflessness could make her risk herself, and he wouldn't allow that. He couldn't.

The tension was thick enough to cut with a butter knife. (Y/N) took his silence quite badly.

"Fine, I see how it is."

She walked away speedily, tears brimming in her eyes. The first friend she made that was actually her age didn't believe in her. She was devastated.

The ache in her muscles from her hard training sessions over these past weeks felt like a feathers stroke compared to the stabbing sensation in her chest. Her parents already thought of her as a fragile little thing, why did others have to view her the same way?

It wasn't fair. Nothing was fair.

Why couldn't she be the one to protect others? Why couldn't she shield the ones she loved from any pain? Why was she so weak?

It didn't take long for the sadness to turn into spite. He was wrong. She was strong and she could shield the others. She just needed to show him. Show everyone. And the heat of the moment, she decided she wanted to prove him wrong. Was it spontaneous? Yes. Would her parents approve? Most likely not. But she was willing to take that risk.

She was going to compete in the Challenge of the Brave.
