(Y/N) blinked slowly, her eyes adjusting to the light. She moved to sit up, examining herself.

Her left arm was in a cast and her head was slightly bandaged up.

When she finally glanced around the room, she noticed Varian sleeping soundly at the side of her bed. He soon woke up with a start, almost falling off his chair.

"(Y/N)! You're awake!"

He hugged you, making sure to avoid your injuries. Only then did you try to remember what happened. You cringed.

"I guess you were right, huh?"

Varian looked perplexed.

"Right about what?"

"I really am weak. I was caught off guard so easily and couldn't do anything. The others are better off fighting without me, I'd just be a burden-"

"(Y/N), are you hearing yourself right now?"

You turned to him, suprised.

"You are the strongest person I know. You got through most of that competition without much effort. Most people can't do that! You were one of the only people left standing. The only reason you lost was because you were looking out for the others. They are lucky to have you. You did great. I'm so sorry I couldn't tell you that sooner. You can handle yourself and I was wrong to doubt you. But please don't endanger yourself like that again. You had me so worried!"

You melted at that. Tears slowly started to gather and you couldn't hold back a sob.

"I'm sorry."

"There's nothing to be sorry for."

"I was reckless."

"It wasn't your fault, if anything it was mine. Why are you crying?"

"I'm just, relieved."

He held you until you stopped crying. Wiping away your tears, you turned to him quickly.

"How long was I out?"

"Oh, only a few hours, maybe 3-5? You should've seen Cassie and Rapunzel though, oh they were not playing around after you got injured. And you scared me half to death!"

"Wait, what happened?"

"Well, Rapunzel won the competition. Or Cassandra? Cassandra got the prize anyway, but Rapunzel was the last one standing. I guess both of them won...?"

"Do you know who brought me here? I would like to thank them."

"Well uh, that was me.", he said, scratching his head.

You looked him in the eyes.

"Varian, thank you. Really. I owe you one."

"I guess we owe eachother now, huh?"

You both chuckled, remembering the first time you hung out.

"I guess we do."

You shuffled a bit, looking away.

"I know last time we saw eachother we fought, and I'm really sorry I didn't approach you. I missed you Varian. It's not the same without your goofy science jokes."

"Hey! My jokes are not goofy!"

You looked at him with an are-you-serious expression and he smiled sheepishly.

"Yeah okay, I guess that's fair. I... I missed you too (Y/N). I'm sorry I never came to apologize. I didn't mean to say what I did, I do really believe that you're the strongest person in Corona."

The two of you stared at eachother.

"You have really pretty eyes you know."

You blushed at that.

"Thank you. Practicing compliments for Cassandra?"

He snickered.

"No, I did mean it. But could you maybe help me out some time soon? I do need some advice on Cassie-"

You playfully punched him.

"You ruined the moment!"

You laughed and he smiled at you.

"But sure, I can help you. What are friends for?"

He hugged you tightly.

"Thank you!"

He excitedly whispered in your ear. You felt weirdly warm at that. You hugged him back. This was nice.

You wanted to hold onto him forever, but sadly he pulled back.

"Oh!"

He facepalmed.

"You need to eat! Give me a second."

He pulled out a sandwich from his bag.

"There you go! A sandwich made by yours truly!"

You smiled fondly.

"Thanks Varian, that's sweet of you. So, what are your plans for Cass?"

He beamed at you.

"Well, there is this science exposition coming up and I had a great idea! I created a a new element and I'll name it after Cassandra-"

You almost spat out the sandwich.

"YOU MADE A WHOLE NEW ELEMENT??"

"Uh, yes, that's what I just told you."

He deadpanned.

"How are you treating this like it's no big deal?"

"You should've seen me a week ago. It took me a long time to calm down, actually."

"Varian, you are a genius!"

"Noo, I'm really not."

"You're the smartest person I've ever met! This is actually a groundbreaking discovery!"

"Noo stopppppp!"

"But it's true!"

He covered his face with his glove-clad hands. His ears were beet red. You chuckled and leaned against the headrest of your bed.

"How long did you stay here, waiting for me to wake up anyway?"

"I didn't leave this room."

You were actually really suprised to hear that. You didn't know he cared this much. You felt butterflies. Hey, had Varian always looked this cute? The sun shone onto his face which drew your attention to his enchanting blue eyes. You started to count the freckles that dotted his skin. Your cheeks heated up and your heart fluttered as you noticed how close he was to you. Had you always felt this nervous around him? Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Hold up. Oh no. Oh no no no no no!

That was when you realized. Had you actually gained a crush on the alchemist? The same alchemist who was going to name an Element after another girl? He liked Cassandra! It would never work out. You reminded yourself and tried to push the feeling down, but it was useless.

You gazed softly at the alchemist as he started to explain the end of the Challenge of the Brave in detail, moving dramatically.

Oh you definitely had a crush. And you had absolutely no idea what to do now.
