I walked into practice the next day with a lot more of confidence. I saw Mels but there was Jack.

"Disappointed?" She asked

"Of course not. How are you." I smiled. She raised an eyebrow but answered anyway.

"I'm okay. Jack has a private lesson so he asked me to train you today. He says you keep trying to lead."

"What?" I put my hand on my hip. He seriously did not say that. Okay it happened once or twice but not all the time.

"You have to let the man lead. Give me a frame please." I did as I was asked

"Thank you. Now...." She started counting and I moved on the 2 counting on my head

"1,2,3,4.1,2,3... You're leading."

"Okay fine but I'm trying not to." She brought me back into a frame"

"When I put pressure you go in that direction"

"Like a dog on a lead?"

"No, like a woman dancing with a man. There is power in letting go."

"I think you're actually losing it." She chuckled

"You're too much in your head and past Ali. Dancing comes from down here. You get to tease him. Make him work for it ." I bit my lip

We strutted out of the studio and spent some time talking. About all sorts of things.

That night was the night of the Sheldrake performance. Mels was doing the final touches on my dress. I fiddled with the top and she slapped my hand away.

"Leave it that's how it's supposed to fit." I stretched my neck from side to side

"What if I get stage fright and forget everything." I panicked. In this moment I felt more human than ever exposed, nervous. I didn't like it.
