Chapter 57 | growing out

Bystanders probably thought you were heading to a costume party or something. Walking down the streets of Japan on deity robes, wings hidden and weapons strapped under the robes wasn't how you thought this would go, but here you were.

You couldn't seem to track light, maybe he'd figured out how to use masking magic. But you could track rem. They had her notebook so she was stuck with them, and Shinigami could be tracked via magic. You were on route to Akita, it was taking a while though. It was practically on the other side of Japan.

You didn't know what light was planing other than trying to start mass panic. The media had been nonstop reporting on the sudden massive spike in kira victims. Light must have given up on trying to prove he was innocent, and rather was focusing on getting power before you could track him down. If he wanted a fight he would get one.

L was desperate to beat the shit out of him with his judges hammer after learning he was the cause of this thousand year old mess. You were lost in thought, wondering how this was going to end. Even if you were to kill him, he'd just reincarnate into a criminal again. He had an evil soul, a history of crime. The only way to stop him would be getting him eternally punished in the underworld. Hades would probably be glad to do so, but it wouldn't be an easy fight. Cerberus could use a new chew toy actually...

You watched L walk beside you, slightly in front of you. An angry aura radiating off him. It was windy today, your robes blew dramatically, your hair did too. And it seems L was in need of a haircut since he was constantly angrily flicking it back.

It was quite fluffy, and when the air was still and his hair was dry, it looked shorter than it was. Now that the wind was violently blowing it back, you noticed how long it had gotten. You'd say a bit past shoulder length.

"L, let's stop a park for a second" you said.

"Why?" He replied.

"I'll tie your hair back"

You sat at a bench, taking a brush from your shoulder bag and some hair ties. Getting to work on some classic side braids pulled back into a small ponytail. You hoped it'd work with his hair length.

"Calm your aura darling, you'll wear yourself out" you said.

"How can I stay calm knowing that monster is out there unpunished. I'm literally a justice deity, I can't stand this" L replied.

"I know sweetheart but wasting your energy on anger now won't do anything. Save the energy for when we find him"

"Yeah... you're right. I just can't believe he is the reason I lost you in the first place"

You continued to braid the framing bits of his hair back around his head. His hair was always so soft, you loved playing with his hair.

"Look, when he find him he'd definitely going to put up a fight. Once we beat the shit out of him we'll hand him over to hades. He can't reincarnate if he's stuck a chew toy for Cerberus" you said.

"How are we going to get Misa away from him?" L asked.

"I don't know how just yet, but if we can figure out how to make her remember her past life where he killed her, maybe that'll open her eyes and she'll go willingly with us"

"That's probably our best bet"

Aphrodite watched with the boys through the life pond as you played with L's hair, talking about the plan. She was on edge, she so badly wanted to start a war with the Shinigami, but for your safety was currently holding back.

"L actually looks good with longer hair" Mello commented.

"He should grow it out all long and have it back in curly buns and braids. That'll make him looo suuupppeeerrr godly" Matt added.

"He does have very pretty hair, what about you Near? You like his hair?" Aphrodite asked.

Near thought for a moment, deciding if he liked the shirt or long better.

"Both a good" he said.

"Your white hair would look gorgeous with long hair. Especially since your curls would loosen into waves"

Near looked up at Aphrodite, intrigued by the idea of long hair.

"Really?" He asked.

"Really. You'll look like a beautiful snow god"

He smiled, he liked the idea of all all white god with long hair. Maybe he'd have to start growing it out...

The gates to Aphrodite's garden opened with a slight creak, everyone looking up to see who entered. Apollo walked in, looking a little confused and concerned.

"Ah, you're back. Did you deliver the letter to zephyr?" Aphrodite asked.

She'd arranged to have zephyr take a letter down to you giving you some routes to get to Akita quicker.

"About that. I asked the higher ups in the aether to relay it to her but they said they hadn't heard from her in days. So I asked around, looked at her house, checked out the other realms and she's just... gone" Apollo replied.

"Shes gone?"

"I can't find her, no one has seen her in days, I can't seem to track her, she's just... vanished"

That was a bit alarming. Zephyr was loyal to the Kami and loyal to her job. A messenger deity never backs out of jobs. So having her vanish is strange.

"Has another Kami asked her to relay something?" Aphrodite asked.

"I asked everyone and none of them have. They haven't been able to reach her either, she's just vanished into thin air" Apollo replied.

"A deity can't just vanish into thin air, especially not someone with her wingspan you'd be able to spot her from a mile away"

"Well apparently she can, she's positively nowhere to be found"

Aphrodite have him a concerned look. This could be bad.

"I'll look into it, have a Kami who has a gap in their schedule run down and tell L and (y/n) as well as relay my message. If I find anything out I'll alert everyone" she said.

"Alright. I believe the Egyptian pantheon don't have much going on at the moment as their traditions for this season are over. I'll ask one of them to relay the message" Apollo replied.

This was rather suspicious, zephyr wouldn't just leave without telling anyone. And she never avoids jobs. Whatever was going on was sketchy to say the least. Aphrodite would have to hope Dionysus isn't drunk at the moment so he can watch the boys while she goes to investigate this.

It was truly a bizarre development...
