Chapter Four

New Friend

I woke up the next morning with a massive headache and a cold and empty house. Trevor decided not to stay the over, since I had purposely ignored him for the rest of the night as I tried and failed to enjoy myself. My head had been replaying the preposterous events that had occurred on my birthday and I found it hard to have fun.

Was it really my fault?

Checking my phone, the time read 12pm and I was glad that it was now a Saturday. I definitely needed time to myself. I read a birthday text from my mum, apologising for not being able to go to my birthday party and mentioning that she'd be coming down to see me today, around 2. This left me no time to myself and made me dread the day ahead.

Grumpily dragging myself out of my bed, I made my way to my bathroom and took a long, much needed shower, wishing that I could wash my problems away too. If only...

Getting dressed, I threw on a grey jumper dress, boots and straightened my hair, wondering why my mum was deciding to come down today, since last year she hadn’t. Throwing on some jewellery and straightening my hair I only just managed to grab myself some breakfast before my door was knocked upon.

"I'm coming mummy!" I yelled running towards the door.

"You look beautiful as always sweetie. I'm really sorry that I missed your party. You know work." My mum apologised once again.

"It's fine mummy. I'm just glad to see you," I replied, giving her a tight embrace.

"So...I heard that you had set a date," She sang, smiling widely, not even trying to withhold her happiness.

"I had always thought that you'd have gotten married to Stephen. I mean he was a nice kid. Only God knows what happened with t--," My mum rambled making my stomach twist at the sound of Stephen's name.

"Mummy! I'm sure you didn't come here to talk about past relationships. Especially that one. So..." I urged, wanting her to get off of that sensitive subject.

"Okay! Fine! Somebody's obviously not over that. Anyway, I came so that we can go wedding dress shopping. I've been waiting for this day for years! 24 to be exact. Now let’s go." She insisted, almost jumping up and down in joy. Stephen's name now seemed to float into my mind and I almost cursed myself for it. His fangs kept reappearing as I went to grab my things before me and my mum headed out of the house finally.

"So I have a wonderful idea about your colour scheme and your wedding dress. There was a beautiful dress that I saw on my way to your house. Just perfect," My mother rambled as we headed to our first wedding shop in a taxi. Feeling my phone vibrate in my hand, I glanced at it and instantly recognised me and Trevor's smiling picture, signalling that he was calling me. My finger absentmindedly clicked ignore before I could even register what I was doing and my heart instantly plunged. What was I doing? It was only a small argument. Yet it had been about Stephen and was our first argument...due to Stephen.

Stephen.

His name seemed to be thought of when bad things happened, since it was all his fault. I went to a new message, blocking out my mother's constant talking, only for a message to pop up.

'I'm sorry Melanie. I didn't mean to make you upset. I love you and I'll never raise my voice at you about that guy ever again. Just answer my calls please. xxx'
