Student Athlete

"What do you mean I can't compete at Worlds?" 

"Charlotte, you should understand the rules by now. You need to compete in Nationals in order to qualify for Worlds" 

"But Yuzu missed Japan Nationals and he's still able to compete is he not?" I push back 

"Yes, but the JSF and Skate Canada are very different. I'm sorry Charlotte" Coach tells me 

"This isn't fair! It wasn't even my fault that I missed Nationals. If Skate Canada has a problem with it than they can got talk to Romano about it" I protest 

"Charlotte, you can still compete at Four Continents alright" he says trying to calm me down

"But I have a chance at winning at Worlds! I have the quads down" 

"I know you do, but you don't have a spot since you missed Nationals", he repeats, " And you haven't skated in weeks" 

"Argh!" I scream throwing my hands in the air and storming out of Coach's office 

This isn't fair. I already missed Nationals and now I'm going to miss Worlds and it's not even my fault....

I step onto the ice and whip off my guards, placing them on the bench. It feels weird to be on the ice again after being away from it for so long. Four Continents is coming up and that could possibly be my last competition for the season, seeing as I don't qualify for Worlds. Since I was away for so long, not only do I need to get my skating back in shape, but I also need to catch up on my school work. Midterms are coming up and I need to get practicing on my chosen piece to perform. I was thinking of doing Yuzu's free music; Hope and Legacy. The song had grown on me since I had to hear the beautiful sound of the piano everyday for the past few month 

I embrace the feeling of the ice once again, allowing my blades to cut the solid surface and carry me across the length of the rink. Truth be told, I never thought I could ever skate again and my life was destined to be stuck with Romano. Alas, if I want to medal at Four Continents I need to stick two solid programs meaning clean quads in both

Who knew Hope and Legacy was such a hard piece to perform? 

"Damn it" I mumble

The second part of this piece always get's me. At this point I'm too frustrated and tired but I can't give up now. I need to perfect this piece if I want a good passing mark and midterms are right around the corner

"Ugh!" I groan putting my head in my hands and slamming my elbows onto the piano keys, making a loud sound echo throughout the empty house

"Ok, come on Charlotte, you got this" I tell myself

I place my hands onto the keyboard once again and allow the intro chords of Hope and Legacy to fill the room. I'm completely immersed in the songs at the moment. That is until Javi came in through the door...

"What's crackalacking chicken! Guess who got Chipotle!" he says carrying a large brown paper bag 

I move my hands from the keys and shoot Javi a small "Hey" before getting up from the piano bench to help him with the bag 

"Was that Yuzu's free music you were playing?" he asks with a smile as he goes to grab two bottles of water from the fridge 

"Yeah, I'm going to perform it for my midterms" I tell him 

"That's cute. You should play it at the rink and let Yuzu skate to your version" he jokes

"Javi that's a great idea! I could get my professor to come down to the Cricket Club while I perform and Yuzu can skate. Of course he needs to agree to it and Coach needs to approve of a piano at the rink but we can work that out. I think my professor would like to see that" I smile giving Javi a side hug 

"Wow chicken, I was joking but ok" he laughs 

"That's just another reason for me to nail this piece. I love you Javi!" I shout carrying my Chipotle bowl to the piano and starting up the song once again 

"I'm sure you love Yuzu more Charlie, but shouldn't you take a break and eat first?" he asks taking a seat next to me on the piano bench and biting a munch out of his burrito 

"When do I ever get a break Javi? I'm a student athlete. Always on my grind" I tell him as I start playing Hope and Legacy from the top
