The group of first years stumbled into the cavernous room, with extremely high ceilings and hundreds of students chattering, wearing almost identical robes. No one noticed the absent sixth year apart from James and Eloise Potter. The school did notice her, however, when the doors slammed open, interrupting Professor McGonagall as Thalia strode in,

"Sup, bitches" she grinned and Professor McGonagall tutted loudly,

"Miss Scamander, please," she said, a disapproving look in her eye, "If you would refrain from using such vile language in the presence of First Years - or at all"

"First Years?!" Thalia raised her eyebrows and gestured lazily to the eleven year olds in front of her, "Those?" she asked, tilting her head, "Okay, wow, I thought those were garden gnomes." The hall erupted into snickers from the students and McGonagall clapped her hands sharply,

"Now, the sorting shall commence-"

"Hold your horses!" Thalia called, interrupting her once more, "What exactly is going on?" she asked and McGonagall's lips thinned,

"I have already explained this Miss Scamander." she said and Thalia's eyebrows raised,

"Did you? Oh, well I wasn't listening, I tuned out after you said 'rules'." the hall laughed once more and she distinctly heard James' guffaw. She looked for him and found his grin, smiling widely at him and Eloise, who was sat on his side.

"The four houses, Miss Scamander," McGonagall began, gaining Thalia's attention once more, "Are: Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Slytherin and Hufflepuff."

"Bless you."

"I beg your pardon?"

"You sneezed Professor," she said simply, "Although, I must admit it was rather odd, it sounded like you were saying the word 'Hufflepuff'. Anyway, what's the fourth house?" If looks could kill, Thalia would be six feet under, courtesy of Professor McGonagall. Her lips thinned and her nostrils flared, causing students to snicker in apprehension of the punishment to come to the small girl stood in the middle of the hall, her long, chocolate hair tumbling down her back in waves and her pale, green eyes searching the Professor's obviously angry face unflinchingly.

"The fourth house is Hufflepuff Miss Scamander, now I would hate to have you lose points before you even have a house, so please hold your tongue and sit on the stool." Thalia rolled her eyes, before shoving her way through the crowd of first years who she really wasn't much taller than, yelling;

"Out of my way, gnomes! I get right of way, I'm higher in the food chain!" Causing many students in the Great Hall to laugh, and some to grumble that she was causing the food to come later with her dramatics. She flopped onto the stool, and raised a hand, snapping her fingers."Give me this hat and let me flaunt it!" She yelled to no one in particular, giving a slight, "Oh!" of surprise when it dropped over her small head and covered her eyes. As the conversation with the sorting hat occured, she got up and paced around, waving her hands wildly, and laughing, obviously giving the sorting hat some of her sass. It seemed the sorting hat got bored of her attitude as it abruptly yelled;

"GRYFFINDOR!" The Great Hall erupted into cheers, some students nodding in agreement with the hat's decision as she sashayed over to the scarlet and gold table, grinning madly and plopping herself down next to James who banged heads with Eloise as they both pulled her into a hug at the same time. James settled for an arm draped around her shoulders as Eloise won the battle for the first hug, and Thalia locked eyes with a redhead down the table from her. The girl raised her eyebrows at the bespectacled boy and rolled her eyes slightly, before looking away and beginning a conversation with a blonde to her side. Eloise, noticing this muttered

"Typical, moving swiftly onward..." and struck up a conversation with Remus, who, it seemed, still wanted to talk to Thalia about her Grandfather, but was too polite to tell Eloise this (she must have known, that cheeky little so-and-so - poor Remus).

"So, what subjects will you be taking?" James asked her.

"I don't know to be honest, is that bad?" She asked, laughing, "I just sort of go where the wind takes me." she raised her hands in a dramaticised gesture and James joined in the laughter.

"Fair enough, we get our timetables tomorrow anyway. Hopefully we'll all be in the same classes, seeing as you're in our house!" Thalia nodded, hoping this to be the case.

"In my old school, it did, so hopefully I will." James looked lost in thought for a minute.

"How did the sorting work at your old school?"

"Well, we walked into a room, with the four house animals on the floor, a Wampus, a Pukwudgie, a Horned Serpent, and a Thunderbird. The animals represent different values, like your ones, as the sorting hat informed me. Wampus is bravery and loyalty, Pukwudgie is kindness and empathy, Horned Serpent is brains and knowledge and Thunderbird is sly and cunning. The animals on the floor move if they want you, and if more than one moves, you get the choice. That's it really."

"So if you're in Gryffindor, you must have been in Wampus?" James asked.

"10 points to James Potter!" Thalia yelled, causing several students to jump, and then laugh at themselves. After Dumbledore's speech which consisted of a few words of nonsense, the plates began to fill up with food. James dived in straight away, with the other boys, whilst Eloise and Thalia were a tad more dignified. After meals had been eaten, and drinks had been drunk, Dumbledore rose again, and gave (in Thalia's opinion, a very boring) lecture about the do's and dont's of the year. After a clap of his hands, all the students rose and trooped off towards their respective common rooms. James was giving Thalia a very detailed tour of everything they were passing, and when they reached the common room, he assured her he would stick with her until she knew her way around. Thalia loved the common room, it was a red and gold tower, with squashy sofas and armchairs, and a fire crackling merrily in a grate. She was guided by Eloise up to her new dorm, where she was introduced to some girls, but immediately forgot their names - she was far too tired to be learning anything like that! The small brunette changed into an oversized muggle baseball jersey that used to belong to her brother and some very short shorts that earned a disapproving look from one girl in her dorm, and jealous looks off of a few others.

"Night all." she slurred, before falling into her soft, warm bed, and dreaming of a certain playful smirk, belonging to someone whom she couldn't get out of her head, until morning.
