School is easy because I'm quiet
I don't speak to the teachers
and they don't speak to me
all they need is the 100%
scribbled in red ink
on all of my homework sets

I don't try to make any more friends
or talk to anyone else except for Mei.

Mei and I sneak away at lunch
to our little staircase
she brings out a protable battery bank
and I slip out the moblie
she smiles at me reassuringly
whispers in Japanese that it'll be okay
and plugs in my phone to the bank

It's quiet
then the screen blinks
and we flinch as it plays out
it's obnoxious melody
to signal it's turning on

"Don't worry about it now,"

Mei tucks the charing phone
safely into her empty lunchbox
and rubs my back,

"Let's stay behind today."
