CHAPTER 17

(Val POV)

Right before the boys' practice Lonnie and I meet in the girl's bathroom and change into the uniforms that I stole. We then put our hair up in the mask before sliding them over our faces. Lonnie hands me a sword and we sneak into the gym.

"All right, boys. Let's line it up. Carlos, you're with me. Let's go," Jay orders as they all lineup.

"Assembler. Salute. Lower the point. Masks down. En garde." They start fighting. "Keep your center!"

"Whoa!" Carlos says as he dodges Jay.

"Eyes on your opponent!" Jay calls out. "Up and over." Carlos jumps over Jay. Lonnie and I then join the fight. Lonnie easily disarms Chad before standing back and watching Jay and I. Jay's and my swords clash together. Jay tries to disarm me but I bring my sword back before hitting him on the butt. Jay then takes his helmet off.

"Get him, Jay!" Carlos calls out gaining everyone that is in the gyms attention. Jay attacks and I block. I then attack by kicking my leg up at him which makes him jump back. "Watch out, Jay." Jay and I go at each other and miss. I spin around him while he rolls on the ground. I go forward to attack and Jay tries to swipe my legs with his but I jump over it before doing a backward one-handed cartwheel. Jay attacks while I turn around and our swords clash together. Jay and I then block and attack back and forth while spinning around each other. I hit his sword to where it is pointing down and quickly grab the handle from him before spinning away. I have my sword pointed at him and his point to the side. "Jay, what happened?" I then attack but Jay dodges each one. Jay then kicks my sword out of my hand and catches it before leaning it on his shoulder. I quickly take my helmet off letting my hair fall out.

"It's Val!" One of the cheerleaders call. I point my sword at Lonnie and she takes her helmet off. "And Lonnie!" The cheerleaders clap.

"Not bad," Jay says with a smile.

"You should put us on the team," I state while smiling at Lonnie who comes to stand beside me. Jay shrugs his shoulders while giving me a quick once-over before walking forward.

"Hey, w-what?!" Chad asks coming forward. "No, no, no. We'll be the laughing stock of the league."

"Your just mad because she beat you," I say.

"A-And what's gonna happen next? We'll have girls playing tourney? Come on, guys," Chad asks.

"FYI, I already play tourney," I state with an eye roll at the same time Jay asks, "So?"

"So? Uh, so, have you not read the rulebook? Section 2, paragraph 3, 11-4. 'A team will be comprised of a captain, a co-captain and seven men.' Hmm? Why don't you read the rulebook?" Chad says as he brings the rule book out of his pocket before showing it around for everyone to see.

"Okay, yeah, but you're down two men! I mean, since Ben had to leave to do all that king stuff," Lonnie says.

"Exactly. We're down two men," Chad says with an emphasis on men.

"Jay..." I say looking at him.

"I'm sorry. Coach trusts me. I'm not gonna stay captain if I just throw out the rulebook," Jay explains.

"If my mother thought that way, she would have lost the war," Lonnie says before leaving.

"Okay. Rulebook. Rulebook," Chad calls after her.

"This isn't the Jay, I know. The Jay I know always gave others a fair chance no matter who they were," I say before I walk off, hitting my shoulder with his as I go.

"All right, guys. Practice is over. Let's go," I hear Jay say before I leave the gym. I change and meet back up with Mal because we are supposed to help Carlos with a truth potion. Reporters find Mal and I on our way to Carlos' room and we run before entering Carlos' room. I look the door before Mal and I start pacing. Mal sees the TV on with her on it and turns it off. Mal and I hit stress overload and we shake while our eyes turn green.

"Whoa. Easy, girls," Carlos says and our eyes turn back normal.

"What? You think this is so easy?! You don't have people taking a photo of you every single time you open your mouth to say boo! I mean, it's not that I could even say, "Boo," but, you know what I," Mal says.

"I'm sorry," Carlos says.

"Mal, deep breath," I say as we both take deep breaths.

"Carlos, don't you ever miss screaming at people and just making them run away from you?" I ask him.

"You're thinking of my mother, and I was usually on the other end of that. So, not really. No," Carlos answers before turning to Mal. "Oh, hey! Did you bring it?" Mal goes to open the container but we hear the door unlock. Chad then sneaks in and closes the door before he throws a key up and catches it. He then turns to see us.

"Hi. Just came to use your 3D printer. Won't be a sec," Chad explains.

"How'd you get a key to my room?" Carlos asks.

"Oh, I printed it off last time I was in here. Uh... you guys were sleeping," Chad answers and we give him a creeped out look. "Look, I just-- Your printer's so much better than mine, and you install these hacks and everything runs so much smoother than mine and..."

"Out! Now," Carlos orders.

"Fine. Fine," Chad says before turning away.

"Chad!" Carlos calls.

"What? Hmm?" Chad asks.

"Leave the key," Carlos orders. Chad sets the key on the table before leaving while slamming the door. "Mal? Val?" Mal and I stop staring into space and look at him.

"Hmm?" Mal asks.

"My potion?" Carlos ask.

"Yeah," Mal says as she opens the container. I then grab it and hold it up.

"Um..." I say as I do.

"So, this thing will make me say what I really feel to Jane?" Carlos asks.

"Yeah. I mean, this is a truth gummy, so take it or leave it," I explain.

"Perfect," Carlos says as he goes to grab.

"Hold on, though," Mal says as she grabs the gummy. "Are you sure that you want to be taking this? Because this is gonna make you say the truth all the time, no matter what, and the only reason that I'm asking is because I know that if I took this right now, I would get myself sent back to the Isle. Which, it's not that that sounds super unappealing, but, you know..."

"Yeah. I'll take my chances, I guess," Carlos says.

"Okay," Mal says as she drops her hand. Dude eats the gummy out of her hand. "Ohh! Bad dog!"

"Man, that thing was nasty! And you... you just got to man up. And while you're at it, scratch my butt," Dude then starts talking. We all look at each other shocked.

"You heard him. Scratch his butt," I say before Mal and I turn to walk away.

"Mal. Val," Carlos tries but we leave the room.
