Manipulative

(A/N I'm aware that like Overhaul, Mimic, and Chronostasis are technically part of the Japanese Mafia and whatever but I couldn't bring myself to kill Hari Kurono (Chronostasis is low key my current fave) so in this fanfic, they were arrested before she got to the main branch)

After the press meeting in the morning with the Avengers Initiative, y/n walked them back to the airport.

They would've stayed longer, but they had their own country to protect, and apparently, Loki and Thor were back in New York and waiting for them.

Y/n wasn't exactly interested in meeting with Norse gods and ruining her already complex world. She stayed dead silent as they walked, ignoring the concerned glances from the Avengers.

"Miss. Crescent?" Peter asked, taking off his translator. "Are you- um, I don't want to be a bother, but are you alright? You're being more quiet than usual."

"I'm not sure-" Natasha shot him a warning glance, but y/n cut her off.

"I'm fine, Peter dear," she smiled gently, her eyes closing momentarily as she did so; she felt bad for manipulating him a bit, but she didn't need the Americans prying more than they already had. "I was patrolling last night and stayed out too late. Plus, we had to get up early to get ready for the press meeting. Then I also had to have my hero agency reinstated in my name; Mirko had taken over for the years we were on the mission."

"Okay, that's reassuring," Peter side-hugged her as they walked, her head barely reaching his shoulder. "You're staying in Japan?"

Looks like her ability to manipulate her emotions, facial features, and everything else was better than ever, whether that was a good thing or not was undecided.

"Unfortunately," y/n laughed a bit. "I know the streets and the areas that have a higher amount of crime, not to mention I grew up here. It's too inconvenient to leave."

"What about that Hawks guy?" Clint asked, his bow in his right hand and arrows slung over his back. "Don't you want to leave because of him? As far as I could tell from the news footage yesterday, he's still an active hero. He helped-"

"I'm well aware that he's a current hero, and I'm well aware that he helped me last night," y/n didn't want to hear someone else say it for her; one of her hands tightly clung to her other elbow. "How about you all? You don't want to come here to work as a hero?"

"I think getting an actual license defeats the point," Stark laughed, tipping back a glass of whiskey. "It's more fun when you're randomly recruited because of a traumatizing event and are expected to continue performing heroics because you're good at it."

"Tony," Natasha sighed, rolling her eyes. "You didn't have to explain the process Fury went through to find the Avengers in the first place. That was a bit overkill."

"Overkill was killing off every mob family in the world," Tony snorted. "This isn't that overkill."

Y/n's shoulders stiffened as he spoke, but he didn't seem to notice.

"Oh, right," Tony turned to her. "Dollface. You got a new costume?"

Y/n looked down at her costume, nearly having forgotten about the change.

Instead of the v-necked one-piece leather suit, she had black leather pants and a leather jacket, with fingerless gloves to be able to use her talons without restriction, a mask covered the left side of her face with the scar over her eye. It also came with calf-high combat boots.

It was a simpler and less feminine version of what she had been wearing before.

Y/n had even ditched the cape, but the utility belt was still slung over her hips.
