The morbidity of the human mind often lead EJ to wonder what death felt like. He pondered on the idea of it would hurt, or even the face that would stare back at him when the time came. The face he imagined, was not one carved of metal.

The Cybermen had surrounded them completely on all sides, at least thirty of them dedicated to ensuring their demise. It was wrong for EJ to assume that the Doctor didn't have a plan, because he nearly always did. Only this time, it felt like it should have been different.

He lunged forwards, and a golden light attacked one of the Cybermen and stretched out to the others, like an electrical charge, but more powerful. The majority of the effected fell to their knees, but the one which received the bulk of the shock disintegrated into practically nothing.

EJ was taken quite by surprise. He didn't know what the Doctor had done, or where he had pulled it from, but he was glad. For a time, at least, they were in relative safety.

Mickey's eyes widened as he clung to Rose's side. "What the hell was that?"

"Or," The Doctor countered. "How about, instead, run!"

They did begin to, and there was a horn beeping at them, and a woman called at them. "Everybody in!" She must have been with Ricky and the other man.

However, as they began to move, Pete attempted to run back inside of the house. The Doctor grabbed onto him, and pulled him back. It was for his own good. "I've got to go back. My wife's in there!"

"Anyone inside that house is dead." The Doctor hissed in his ear, calmly. "If you want to help, then don't let her die for nothing. You've got to come with us, right now!"

"Come on!" The woman in the van called for them again. "Get a move on!"

This was when the Doctor began realise that EJ was right. He really did know how to pick his friends, because Rose was struggling too. She was staring at the house, even though she knew they needed to go. The Thompson boy was going it to, and if need be, he would drag them both over to the van if it meant they were safe.

"Rose." He mumbled, placing a hand on her shoulder. "She's not your mother."

She nodded, but it wasn't convincing. "I know."

"Come on," The Doctor guided her away, eventually coming the the tattooed boy, who's eyes seemed to be glazed over. "EJ..."

"I'm fine." He mumbled, just needing a moment to take it all in... it was a lot. "Let's go."

"Finished chatting?" The woman called exasperated once more - EJ hadn't even met her yet and she was already getting on his nerves. "Never seen a slower getaway in my life!"

The Doctor made sure that everyone else was in the back of the van first before getting in himself, sitting beside EJ, opposite from Rose. The three complete strangers were in the front, looking at them through a metal grate as the woman drove. The roads were quite bumpy, but then again, they probably weren't on roads yet.

Ricky sneered at them; his demeanour was much harsher than that of Mickey. "What was that thing?"

"Little bit of technology from my home." The Doctor shrugged, revealing the grey gem in his hand.

"It's stopped glowing." Mickey seemed to quiver. "Has it run out?"

He shook his head, pocketing the item. "It's on a revitalising loop. It'll charge back up again in about four hours."
