CHAPTER 9

I breathe out a sigh.

Ashton's sitting next to me on the steps, looking at the cars in the parking lot.

The world seems to be at peace right now.

It's quiet out here.

Usually LA isn't like this but right now in this moment, it feels so serene, so calm.

It's almost like it's begging me to tell Ashton what happened.

My hands wipe over my eyes, the crying has stopped.

"I was a drummer." I say quietly.

I guess it's now or never.

He turns his head and looks me in the eyes.

They look sad.

"My brother was a drummer. He was the one that taught me how to play."

I take a deep breath.

"Two years ago my brother Cameron and my best friend Alice were on their way home and a semi ran the red light. Their-"

Tears were streaming down my cheeks once again.

Ashton put his arm around my shoulder and I leaned into him.

"Th-their car was rolled and it burst into flames. They died instantly."

I blink my eyes closed.

"One month after they died, my dad was called to go back to Afganistan. He's still alive but I haven't seen him since. He tries to keep in touch but it's so hard... It's crazy scary how you can lose so many people you love in such a short time."

"Jordyn, I'm so sorry." He says quietly.

"It's okay." I turn my head into his chest and inhale deeply.

This boy smells incredible.

"My parents are separated." He breathes, almost inaudible.

"What?" I turn my head so it's still resting on his chest, while I stare at the parking lot.

"My parents are separated. My dad just kind of walked out of our life.." He drifts off.

"Ashton, I'm so sorry."

"It's fine. After he left, it gave me the motivation to be the best father ever when I grow older." He mumbles.

"That's great." I smile, turning my head back around so it's buried in his chest.

"Do I smell good or do you just like nuzzling my nonexistent man-boobs?"

I choke and laugh at the same time causing one of those awkward spit laughs.

"Ew! Did you just dribble on me!?"

I pull my head away from him, dying of laughter.

He laughs as he playfully pushes my shoulders.

"Dammit! I hate you!" He giggles.

"You can't hate me. I'm a frickin' cupcake." I laugh as I do the cupcake pose.

"Jordyn are you okay?" I hear my mom's voice say.

The two of us turn around to see her peeking out the door.

"I'm fine Mom." I say.

"Alright, well it's my turn with Ashton. So you're gonna have to share."

Ashton snorts next to me.

"Yeah yeah." I wave her off.

I turn to face the boy that's laughing like a hyena next to me.

"You thought that was funny?"

He nods his head and closes his eyes.

I give him a hard shove.

"C'mon loser." I say, standing up.

He gets up and right before he can open the door I stop him.

"I don't hate you." I say quietly in his ear as I hug him tight.

I don't hate you.

I don't hate you at all.
