Chapter 31

Lizzie's POV

Lizzie huddled by the flickering flames of the fire as she waited for Aiden to return. No one had mentioned a word about what she'd experience in the forest despite them all being situated in the same room together.

Kat sat next to her, idly chatting away as she attempted to distract Lizzie but she was still in disbelief. Werewolves existed. The thought circled her mind as she began to piece together everything she'd witnessed since arriving in Norhaven.

It suddenly made sense why everyone respected Aiden, he was the leader of the pack, the reason why Kat couldn't argue against him when he made the final call.

A quick look at her watch informed that it'd been five hours since he saved her, but with every minute that passed she couldn't ignore the guilt that gripped her body.

Kat attempted to start up a new conversation about her favourite Nicholas Sparks films but Lizzie couldn't help but glance at the door hoping that Aiden would walk through it unscathed, but she only disappointed herself, yet again.

She flicked her eyes over to Cassandra and Donovan who lay on the couch watching something together on their phone, they didn't seem too concerned about Aiden which only indicated that this wasn't the first time that this had occurred, the thought unsettled her.

Jack sat brooding again in the corner, he blamed the entire situation on Lizzie which for the first time she couldn't deny. It was entirely her fault that Aiden was being stitched up right now.

"Lizzie stop fretting" Kat pleads leaning over to squeeze Lizzie's hands.

Jack huffs in annoyance but Kat only rolls her eyes in his direction.

"He will be fine"

"How do you know that, you didn't see the fight. The other wolf was..."

"A rogue" Jack says coldly. "We know"

Lizzie's eyes narrow as she looks to Kat for answers.

She sighs, throwing her hands up in the air. "We were supposed to wait for Aiden before we discussed anything but it seems like Jack thinks now is the perfect opportunity"

"Well it's not like we can keep it a secret anymore, we might as well tell her since she's nearly gotten Aiden killed tonight"

"Honestly Jack, shut it" Donovan barks, throwing a hard stare in his direction.

Lizzie blinks away her tears as she turns towards the fireplace.

"This isn't all Lizzie's fault, she should never have left the safety of the pack house" He throws a pointed look Kat's way.

"She was miserable with us and I already mind-linked the pack warriors to guard her"

"And what do you not think that she's not miserable now"?

Everyone looks at Lizzie who struggles to keep her face void of tears. She wouldn't breakdown in front of them all, she'd wait until she was alone in her room tonight. She didn't want the sympathetic states or Jack to sneer at her tears.

Lizzie clears her throat, "What's a rogue"

All four of them share glances, communicating silently before they reach an agreement.

"A rogue is a wolf without a pack" Donovan explains finally providing Lizzie with answers. "Every wolf belongs to a pack but when a wolf endangers the pack or commits a crime they can be exiled".

"Rogue wolves are extremely dangerous" Kat adds. "Without a pack it's difficult for them to fend for themselves, most of them die whilst trying to trespass into another pack's land to seek shelter or food, other times the loneliness ends up making them crazy".

Lizzie nods, recalling the matted fur and crazed look in the rogues eye.

"What was surprising was that it was an orchestrated attack, rogues don't normally band together but it appears that they've formed their own pack"

"Why, what do they want"

Everyone is silent before Donovan's words fill the air.

"We don't know"

Lizzie's gut told her that they knew exactly what they wanted, but it appeared that they still didn't trust her.

"What I'd like to know is why Henry warned of us" Jack snarls pinning Lizzie with his full stare."I bet you're working with him to bring down the back?"

Lizzie is stunned into silence, expecting Donovan or Kat to defend her but by the way everyone was staring at her, she knew they wanted an actual answer.

"Elizabeth would never betray the pack" Aiden's voice filters into the room as he appears by the doorway.

Heat rises to her cheeks as her eyes drift over his shirtless body, displaying the stitching on the side. She was surprised by how small the wound actually was, she could've sworn the rogue ripped out his complete side by the amount of blood that spilled.

As he walked into the room, Lizzie couldn't help but notice the hidden strain he was placing on himself just by moving.

His eyes captures hers and she dares not look away, still in utter disbelief that Aiden was the wolf who saved her.

"I want to talk to Elizabeth alone" he states

Surprisingly without a word, everyone leaves, Kat sends her a final glance before she exits the room, leaving her entirely alone with Aiden.
