Chapter 17: Abrupt Changes

Flipping through my clipboard, double checking and reviewing my notes about the patients we have admitted. “Nurse, saan ang billing office dito?” Agad naman akong napatingala. “Nasa left wing po ng first floor, malapit po sa pharmacy.” I instructed and the woman already thanked me.

“Pupunta ka kay EJ mamaya?” Andy asked when I reached our station.

I nodded as I closed my clipboard. “Ikaw ba?

“Baka bukas na lang ako, may kailangan pa kaming tapusin ni Ponzi eh. Ikamusta mo na lang ako kay EJ ha.” She said and I gave her a nod.

“Kaya nga...may problema ba?” This time I was the one to ask.

It’s unusual for them to make a fuss like this.

Everyone looked at my direction with their about-to-cry eyes.

“What?”

“Mag volunteer ka na lang mamaya kapag nag demand ng mag r-report si CI, Vanessa.” Someone from Logan Hills University said, making me frown at them. I sighed heavily, taking my tumbler out of my bag before throwing them another glance.

We’re seriously already on our 3rd year in college and yet they’re still cowering...

“Kapag tumawag ba yung doctor ng nurse na mag a-assist magtuturuan kayo?”

I bluntly asked which made them fall into silence, even lowering their heads or avoiding eye contact with me.

“Oh diba, napahiya kayo.”

Napalingon naman kaming lahat sa nagsalita.

“Good evening, Nurse Hernandez.” Andy greeted.

“Let’s go inside the hall, take your things para diretso out na kayo.”

When we arrived at the hall where brief lectures and quizzes take place, Nurse Hernandez ended up making everyone report by asking everyone questions.

That LHU student fortunately got spared from a late night earful.

Not long after, we were finally dismissed. Placing my things at my car’s backseat, I also thought of what I should bring to EJ’s condo. “Ano pupunta ka pa ba talaga?” Lauren asked from the other line, I put my phone on speaker and threw it to the passenger seat.

“Oo, papunta na. May pagkain ba kayo diyan?”

“Ano ba Nessa! Take your time! Go lang, bili ka lang ng pagkain, kahit after three hours ka pa makarating!”

“Lasing ka ba?” I asked then Lauren giggled.

Now I’m having second thoughts from going to their unit.

I thought we won’t be drinking tonight...

The call was cut off and I already hurriedly drive towards the near coffee shop where EJ mostly buys her favourite blueberry cheesecake. Bahala na si Lauren kung magrereklamo siya sa dala ko, hindi naman siya pupuntahan ko, it’s EJ that needs the consoling from everyone.

Iniisip ko pa lang lahat ng nangyari kay EJ within a span of two days, naaawa na agad ako. Kung kailan sobrang busy namin dahil 3rd year 2nd sem na kami saka siya pinaulanan ng ka-shit-an.
