Chapter 24: The Real Score

“We’re not to blame here.” I sighed as I took my bag from my locker.

The patient from Room 408 had to undergo an appendectomy surgery earlier after the commotion with Mrs. Lucena.

But things were already too late.

The surgery wasn’t successful; the patient died an hour ago.

At kaming tatlo nila Ponzi ang nag asikaso sa kan’ya before transferring her to morgue.

“Hindi ‘to yung first time pero parang hindi ko talaga kayang masanay.” Lim said as he dropped himself to the bench. “Parang kasalanan kapag nasanay ka.” Ponzi added and I only looked at them. “Wala namang nagsabing kailangan nating masanay.” I said, making them raise their heads to look at me.

“We can’t save everyone, but I personally think na if we fail to save a patient, there are a lot more we can possibly save. Lalo na kung nasa kondisyon yung mga pag iisip natin. I’m not saying we shouldn’t feel any guilt or regrets, that’s given lalo na kung makatao ka. Ang sa’kin lang, huwag niyo namang hayaang pati yung ibang pasyente natin is mapabayaan kasi nalagasan tayo.”

As I approached them, I gently tapped their shoulders before carrying my bag.

“Babawi tayo.” I said as I gave them a nod.

That’s enough for me.

“Sige na, see you guys tomorrow.”

I said, waving my hands at them as I started walking out of the room.

Way back in college, I was never close to both of them. Ponzi and I were block mates, while classmate ko naman si Lim, he’s one of those close friends of Timothy.

Passing by the busy morning hallways, I already slid my hands inside my uniform’s front pockets. It’s a Saturday and may free consultation until tomorrow kaya medyo maraming tao ngayon dito sa Sevit Hosp.

Too bad.

I wanted to take part in it but our head nurse informed us that we aren’t allowed to do so.

May next time pa naman.

I was pulled out of my deep thought when I saw Dwight outside the elevator when the doors opened. He’s once again wearing his stoic face, the one he usually wears the first time I met him.

Mukhang gumana yung apple to keep him away from me...

Nagtanguan naman kaming dalawa.

Kumusta na kaya lovelife nito?

As I got off the lift, Dwight then passed by me and entered the elevator.

I really don’t like getting involved in other people’s businesses.

They’re already old enough to take care of their shit.

Looking back, I remember feeling intimidated by Travis, Estelle, and Dwight’s auras. Parang silang tatlo yung magulang sa circle of friends nila. Travis rarely talks, kung magsasalita ay sasawayin niya lang yung mga pinsan niya or he’ll talk shit about them. Dwight on the other hand smiles more than Travis does, mas nakikipag biruan din siya and becomes a strict softy when around his cousin, Chlowie. Lastly, Estelle used to give off the impression of that girl who would stare directly at your soul and open her mouth to spit some foul words if needed; sassy.
