***TRIGGER WARNING: SLIGHT SA (closer to end of chapter)***

"What are you doing here?" You asked as everyone in the room looked between you and your mother. After she left you a week ago you had thought you wouldn't see her again until at least the end of the school year, maybe later.

"I came to see how you're settling in." She said coldly as she stepped inside, sending every one of your friends a nasty look. Your blood ran cold as she uttered these words and your body involuntarily took a step back.

"You know, you could just call." You hissed, your fists balling up at your sides. You would be lying if you said your mom didn't scare you, and it was clear that everyone in the room noticed it.  As she took a few more steps into the room you could see her scanning all of the girls up and down, a disgusted look on her face.

"We both know if I called you wouldn't answer."  She replied quickly, you just rolled your eyes at her words to avoid accepting that they were true. You also found it very strange that she wanted to 'check in on you'  Because a week ago, she wanted nothing to do with you.

"Okay, well I'm fine, you can go now."  You hissed, brushing past her and to the door, holding it open and motioning for her to leave. She just let out a heavy sigh and turned to face you, a blank expression on her face.

"Well, that was the only reason I came."  She replied as she walked up to you, sticking her hand in her pocket quickly. "I found this in the attic, and your father said I should give it to you." You knew when she said your father, she meant her husband, not your actual dad. So you were skeptical as to what that man would want her to give you.

As she extended her hand toward you, you could see a small brown paper package, wrapped in twine with your name written on the side.

"What's this?" You asked as you took it from her, inspecting the small package quickly before meeting her gaze again. You could tell she was not happy that she gave it to you, and you could also tell she wanted nothing more than to leave you again.

"I'm not sure, your father wouldn't let me open it. But now that you have it, I will be going."  Without another word she walked out of the door and slammed it behind her, the silence in the room hanging heavy. You weren't sure of what to do, especially because there were other people in the room, and you still have the unaddressed conversation about you and Wednesday.

Thankfully, the awkward silence didn't last too long because Enid suddenly spoke, her sweet demeanor being refreshing compared to your mom's harsh presence.

"So, she seems lovely." Enid joked as soon as she was sure your mom was gone, everyone relaxing a bit as she broke the tension.

"Yeah, tell me about it, I have to live with it."  You laughed awkwardly as you crossed the room and sat on your bed. You looked up, and as if on queue made eye contact with Wednesday, your heart immediately racing.

"Well, what's in the package?" Enid squealed excitedly, sitting next to you and crossing her legs. You looked down at the small thing in your hand and suddenly felt very anxious, unsure as to if you wanted to know.

As you slowly undid the twine, your hands began to shake, everyone holding their breath and waiting for the big reveal. And just as you were about to open it, a booming voice spoke.

"Aren't you ladies supposed to be in class?"

Shit, Weems.

After you were all rushed to your separate classrooms, and told that you would have to attend detention at the end of the day, you sat down at your desk and pulled out the small package.

You were sort of glad that Weems had interrupted, because you weren't sure that you wanted to open this in front of everybody. So now that you are stuffed in the back of a classroom, you could finally peel open the rest of the packaging.

Inside there was a very small box, and a crumpled up note, the paper looking kind of torn and a little dirty. You slowly unfolded it and read the words that have been very clearly practiced a 100 times.

Hey kiddo, I know I will never get to meet you. And that you might not ever get this, but it's still worth a try.

Just know I'm always here for you, even in spirit.

Love, Dad.

The small note brought tears to your eyes, and you just hoped that no one else in class noticed.  As you quickly folded the paper back up and stuffed it into your pocket, you turned your attention to the small box, the anticipation of what could be inside almost killing you.

As you pop the lid off, you were pleasantly surprised by what you saw inside. It was a small silver necklace, on one side there was a carving of two birds flying together, and on the other was your birth date.

As you admired the necklace the bell suddenly rang, catching you off guard. You quickly slid the small piece of jewelry over your head and placed the box back in your pocket with the note, rushing out of class and dreading detention later.

As you slid into the desk between Enid and Wednesday, you couldn't help but feel your heartbeat increase, the gothic girl making you so nervous all of a sudden. You were about to tell Enid what had been in the package from your dad, but Weems walked in, a tired expression on her face.

"There is an emergency situation that has come up," she began, walking into to room and looking at everyone. The only people in there were you, Wednesday, Enid, Yoko, and some gorgon stoners that had got caught smoking. "I will not be here today."

Everyone got excited, thinking that meant you wouldn't have to attend detention, but she quickly killed that idea.

"Though I have to leave, I am going to have one of you walk to Ms. Thornhills office and bring her back here."

"Oh, oh, me!" Enid pleaded as she shot her hand up in the air, practically flinging herself out of her seat. You saw Weems's eyes narrow at the girl, and you knew that Enid definitely wasn't going to be chosen. The tall woman scanned her eyes over the room, and unfortunately, they landed on you.

"Ms. y/l/n, you will go." She said blankly, grabbing her bag and heading to the door, holding it open. As you slunk out of your desk you couldn't help but look over at Wednesday, watching as she observed your every move.

As you walked out of the room and past Weems she just gave you a small nod, and you knew that she was trusting you to get this done. You didn't give it another thought and began the long trek to Thornhill's classroom, all the way across the school.

After just a few minutes, you heard harsh footsteps behind you, picking up your pace almost instantly. The footsteps followed, becoming increasingly closer with each step, and just as you were about to duck into any classroom, the owner of these steps spoke.

"Hey, new girl! Where are you going so fast?" You recognized the voice instantly and physically cringed, turning around quickly to be met face-to-face with Xavier.

"Oh, hey, sorry I gotta go." You rushed, trying to get out of there as quickly as possible. You had never had a real conversation with the boy, and you didn't want to either. As you took a few steps you felt his hand grab your forearm, pulling you back.

"Woah, I'm sure you have a few minutes to spare." He smirked as he pulled you practically on him, his body close to yours. "Oh, this is pretty." He spat, his finger wrapping in the necklace you had just received earlier that day.

"Xavier stop," you groaned as you pushed him off you, trying to turn around again, but you quickly felt his hands back on you, your back hitting a nearby locker. "dude, get off me," you yelled, trying to shove him again.

"Stop yelling," he hissed as he placed his hands on your hips, your heart stopping as you realized what was about to happen. As the tears began to fall you shut your eyes tight, trying to breathe as you prepared for the worst.

"Touch her and you're dead." A familiar voice spoke, your eyes opening to see the one person who could help you.

Wednesday.
