Chapter Twenty

I met Marcel at the small cafe that we had been at earlier in the day. He had sent everyone home for that night, and had about half an hour until he was supposed to meet Cami. I sat up on the stool of the bar, right beside him.

"So, what'd you want to talk about?"

Marcel stayed silent, almost seeming nonchalant. He took a sip from his drink before speaking. "We need to talk about Diego."

"Oh, wonderful," I sighed, pouring the drink into my own glass before downing the whole thing.

"You two need to get it together. You're not the same as you were before, not since the Mikaelsons came back. Why?"

"I just..." I didn't know what to say. "I don't know how I feel anymore, Marcel. I'm sorry."

Marcel bit his lip, then sighed.

"Alright, now it's my turn," I said. "It's time for you to tell me where Elijah is."

Marcel sighed again. "Rose, you know I can't do that."

"No, Marcel. What I know is that it's time for you to pay for your actions," I said, narrowing my eyes at him.

"Actions? MY actions? If you're talking about a hundred years ago, you four are the ones that left, not me."

"You were alive! Because of me! I saved you, hoping that you would come and look for us, but you did not. Therefore, you have no right to keep to this city, seeing how you seem to think you own it."

"I do own it!" He shouted, standing up and towering over me. But I didn't feel the least bit intimidated. "The quarter, hell, the whole city, belongs to me!"

"No, it doesn't! And neither does Elijah! You are starting a war here, Marcel!" I growled. "If you don't give Elijah back to me, I will take him back by force. And you will regret it."

"Is this what you wanted?!" He shouted angrily. "You wanted to come here and make friends, then just ditch us?!"

"I made friends with all of you because I needed you! I wanted to be happy here! But I can't. Not anymore," I said, my tone going down to a whisper. "Not without Elijah."

"What?" He said, the anger still in his voice. "You love him now?"

"No," I replied, shaking my head. "But I can't live with knowing that you could have killed him already."

"I didn't kill him," Marcel growled.

I bit my lip, then sighed. "But you will. I know that you will." And with those last words, I turned and left the cafe, hoping that he would get it through his thick skull that whatever friendship we had was over.

I returned home to see Klaus throw a lighter onto two bodies. He didn't notice me there, until I cleared my throat. He glanced back and forth between myself and the bodies, seeming more than surprised to see me there.

"Rose..." He whispered, furrowing his brows. "You came back."

"Did you ever doubt that I would?" I said, smiling softly at him.

"Well... Yes, actually, I did. Why are you here? Why not with Marcel?" He asked, and for once, he almost seemed unsure of what he should say.

I sighed, biting my lip. "Family comes above all. I tried to convince him to give Elijah back, and he refused. You are the one person that I can truly trust, Klaus. If you help me find Elijah, then I will be eternally grateful."

He stayed silent for a few moments, before the corners of his lips turned up into a smile. "I've been thinking about it for a long while, Rose. And I believe it's time for our family to be reunited."
